BRISTOL, R.I.—The Babson College men's swimming and diving team captured 13 of the 14 events to defeat Roger Williams University, 177-85, in the season-opening dual meet Saturday morning at the RWU Aquatic Center.
With the win, the Beavers are off to a 1-0 start in dual meets while the Hawks are 0-1.
First-year
Matthias McFarlane (Trumbull, Conn.) led the Beavers with three individual victories in his collegiate debut. He captured the 100-breaststroke in 58.39 seconds, the 200 breast in 2:14.32, and the 100 fly in 54.09 seconds.
Three other Beavers brought home first place in a pair of individual events. Sophomore
William Iglar (Marietta, Ga.) finished first in the 1000 free in 10:30.12 and the 100 free in 49.14, classmate
Nehemiah Rhee (Paramus, N.J.) was the winner of the 200 butterfly in 1:58.29 and the 200 IM in 2:01.10, and first-year
Evan Hong (Longmeadow, Mass.) touched the wall first in his collegiate debut in the 200 free in 1:46.38 and the 500 free in 4:58.79.
Babson captured both backstroke events as sophomore
Thomas Ambelang (Bernardsville, N.J.) won the 100-yard event in 54.91 seconds and junior
Anthony Taslakov (Sherborn, Mass.) took the 200 back in 1:59.10.
The Beavers also brought home first place in both relay races, with Ambelang, senior
Zackary Cheung (Monterey Park, Calif.), Rhee, and sophomore
Tommy Hannenian (Sacramento, Calif.) opening the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay and Hong, Hannenian, Iglar, and Cheung closing the meet with a win in the 200 free relay in 1:28.93.
The Green and White showed strong depth with second-place finishes in five events, including Tasklakov in the 200 free (1:46.64), Hong in the 50 free (22.48), Rhee in the 200 back (2:04.55), sophomore
Nathan Huynh (Naperville, Ill.) in the 100 breast (59.50), and first-year
Jason Spears (Queen Creek, Ariz.) in the 200 IM in 2:03.60.
The team also turned in a half dozen third-place finishes, including Cheung in the 100 breast (1:00.63) and 100 free (49.82), first-year
Josh Adler (Merrimac, Mass.) in the 500 free (5:11.31 and 1000 free (10:36.11), Huynh in the 200 breast (2:18.42), and Ambelang in the 100 fly (54.97).
Babson will travel to WPI for the annual multi-team meet with Brandeis, and Coast Guard on Friday, October 31 at 5:30 p.m.
