DiGiovanni’s Hat Trick Sparks No. 4 Field Hockey Past Clark, 6-0

Beaver Senior Becomes 14th Player in Program History to Join 100-Point Club

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) registered a natural hat trick in the opening 17 minutes of the game as No. 4 Babson College rolled to a 6-0 victory over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, the Beavers extended their winning streak to 10 games and improved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEWMAC. The Cougars dropped their fifth game in a row and fell to 8-7 on the season and 0-6 in conference play.

Junior Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.), sophomore Lilly Goettsche (Glencoe, Ill.) and first-year Aurielle Wolf (Millburn, N.J.) tacked on one goal apiece for the Beavers, and sophomores Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) and Charlotte Roe (Wayne, Pa.), juniors Grace Mullaney (Boxford, Mass.) and Jenny Purtell (Beverly, Mass.), and graduate student Lauren Knight (Orleans, Mass.) recorded assists. First-year Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) and senior Josie Ashton (Chatham, N.J.) made one save apiece to combine on the shutout in the Beaver goal.

Junior Rachel Reiter (Millburn, N.J.) made 12 saves in a strong effort in the Clark goal.

Clark came out strong with a pair of penalty corners in the first 20 seconds of the game, but it took DiGiovanni three minutes to open the scoring. She took a pass from Roe in prime position inside the scoring circle and ripped a shot past Reiter from the middle of the zone for her first goal of the day.

DiGiovanni struck again in the 10th minute to double the Beaver lead. She collected the insert from sophomore Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, Colo.), dribbled to the right side and unleashed a booming shot past a sprawling shot Reiter inside the left post to make it 2-0 heading into the second frame.

DiGiovanni completed her second career hat trick less than two minutes into the second stanza. Mullaney sent a ball toward the cage from outside the arc on the right side, and DiGiovanni redirected the through Reiter for a three-goal lead.

The Beavers needed just two minutes to extend the lead to 4-0 on a penalty corner. Baroni fired a shot from just inside the circle on left side and Braren tipped it in in front of the net as the Green and White held a 4-0 lead at the half.

After Babson kept Clark without a shot in the second and third quarters, the Beavers extended their lead late in the third. Knight sent a crossing pass from deep on the right side, and Goettsche tipped the ball through Reiter for her first goal of the season.

The Green and White got solid playing time for the reserves in the second half and tallied their final goal with less than two minutes remaining. Purtell took a pass from Shoflick and took a spinning shot from the edge of the right side of the arc, and Wolf tipped it past the goalie for her first career goal to round out the scoring.

Babson finished with 30 shots, including 18 on target, while holding the Cougars to two total attempts and one shot on goal in each of the first and fourth quarters. The hosts doubled up the Cougars in penalty corners, 12-6.

The Beavers play their last conference road game on Tuesday at Springfield at 6:30 p.m. Clark looks to stop its skid Tuesday at Wellesley at 7 p.m.
