SPRINGFIELD, Mass.— Senior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) broke a 1-1 tie with the go-ahead goal with less than 11 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to help No. 3 Babson College edge upset-minded Springfield College, 2-1 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey game Tuesday evening at Stagg Field.
With the victory, the Beavers won their 11th consecutive game this fall and improved to 15-1 on the season, 7-0 in the NEWMAC. The Pride had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in conference games.
Sophomore
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, and senior
Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) and first-year
Anna Bonazzoli (Clinton, Mass.) produced assists. First-year
Madison Tibbals (Gorham, Maine) earned the win in goal without making any saves as the Beavers had an 13-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior Sarah Healy (Niantic, Conn.) scored the opening goal of the game for Springfield with an assist from junior Amber Wolkner (Farmington, Conn.). First-year goalkeeper Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) finished with nine saves in the Pride goal in the setback.
Babson had a 4-2 shot advantage in the opening frame but it was the hosts who got on the scoreboard first. Wolkner took a free hit on a restart from 30 yards out into the scoring zone, and Healy redirected in near the right post through Tibbals for a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute.
The Green and White upped the pressure in the second quarter with all seven penalty corners and all seven shots, and tied the game on a corner in the 20th minute. Following a fake possession by DiGiovanni after the insert, Michelotti slid a pass to the left and Baroni ripped a booming shot through traffic and into the back of the cage to even the score at 1-1.
The Beavers kept up the attack on the Springfield cage and earned five corners in a six-minute span, but Orcutt made a pair of saves and the teams went into the half tied at 1-all.
Babson continued to dominate in the third quarter, producing a 6-0 margin in shots and earning eight corners, but could not break through. Orcutt made a stop on sophomore
Taylor Shoflick (Greenwood Village, Colo.) early on and followed with a pair of stops on Baroni. The Pride keeper then denied DiGiovanni and Bonazzoli on consecutive corners in the final minute of the frame to keep the game deadlocked.
DiGiovanni delivered the knockout blow for the Beavers in the 49th minute. Bonazolli took a long ball from junior
Emma Smith (Kenilworth, Ill.) and sent a pass from outside the arc to the Babson senior in the middle of the zone, and she spun to her left and fired a blast through Orcutt's pads for the eventual game-winner. Neither team was able muster a shot on goal the rest of the way.
Babson finished with a 21-2 advantage in total shots and a 19-1 margin in penalty corners.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 12 p.m. as the Beavers return home to host Salve Regina at MacDowell Field and Springfield visits Wheaton.
