SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.—First-year
Lindsey Cassady (Westfield, Ind.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 85th minute to help visiting Babson College defeat Mount Holyoke College, 1-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon
With the win, Babson improves to 6-1-4 overall and 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2011. Mount Holyoke has now dropped four straight games to slip to 1-6-3 overall and 0-5 in the NEWMAC.
Despite a decided advantage in both possession and shots, the Green and White was held off the scoreboard until the closing minutes. Sophomore
Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) was hauled down by a Mount Holyoke defender dribbling through the right side of the box with 5:09 remaining and Cassady stepped up and drilled the ensuing penalty kick into the upper corner for her first career goal.
First-year Babson goalkeeper
Maisie Creamer (Boulder, Colo.) was forced to make just one save while keeping the first clean sheet of her career. Lyons' senior goalkeeper Clarissa Govea (Pico Rivera, Calif.) was terrific in defeat, making a career-high 16 saves.
First-year
Sarah Hogan (South Glastonbury, Conn.) hit the post following a corner kick in the 17th minute and Cassady saw her 25-yard blast ricochet off the crossbar in the 29th minute. Govea snared a flick by Beavers' junior
Priscilla-Rose Men-Martin (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) from inside the six-yard box following a corner in the 55th minute and made her best save of the day in the 69th minute, punching away Cassady's half-volley from point-blank range.
Sophomore
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) also saw her bid to open the scoring from a tight angle glance off the crossbar and out of danger with just over eight minute to play.
The Green and White finished with a 57-2 edge in shots and got off 34 attempts over the final 45 minutes. The Beavers also attempted all 14 corner kicks in the game, which matched their season high.
Both sides return to action on Wednesday as Babson travels to Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m., while Mount Holyoke hosts Coast Guard at 7 p.m.
