BABSON PARK, Mass.—The Babson College women's swimming & diving team won the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to defeat visiting Wesleyan University, 146-144, in a dual meet inside Morse Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Babson, which has won three consecutive meets going back to November 2, improve to 6-3 on the season. The victory also was the first over a NESCAC foe for the Beavers since November 2000 when they defeated Bowdoin. Wesleyan remains winless at 0-5.
Trailing by three points entering the 400 free relay, the Babson quartet of graduate student
Anya Pelshaw (Sterling Heights, Mich.), sophomore
Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) and first-years
Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) and
Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) finished more than four seconds ahead of the Cardinals' top team, posting a time of 3:43.35.
The Beavers won nine of 16 events on the day, highlighted by two individual victories apiece by Pelshaw, Netishen and first-year
Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.). Pelshaw, who was making her Babson debut, took first in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 32.50 and followed it up by swimming 27.38 to win the 50 butterfly. Turhan touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (1:00.22) and 100 IM (1:03.84), while Netishen won the 50 free with a time of 25.23 and the 100 free in 56.14.
Senior
Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, Calif.) claimed Babson's last individual victory with a time of 1:12.03 in the 100 breaststroke in addition to teaming with Turhan, Netishen and senior
Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.) to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.16. Daniels also was the runner-up in the in the 50 breaststroke with her time of 32.62, while Tran came in second with a time of 28.02 in the 50 backstroke.
Senior
Kendall Garvey (Wilbraham, Mass.) came in second in the 1000 free with a time of 11:36.68 and followed it up by later taking second in the 500 free in a time of 5:43.09. Racicot was the runner-up in both the 50 free (25.98) and 100 free (57.84), and senior
Maggie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) claimed second place in the 50 back with a time of 1:03.17 and took third in the 50 back with a time of 29.65.
Gilbert came in second in the 200 free (2:01.81) and third in the 100 breast (1:13.00), first-year
Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 100 IM with a time of 1:05.20 and placed third in the 100 back (1:04.39), and junior
Vangella Randell (Holden, Mass.) finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 11:58.82.
Babson returns to action on Saturday, January 18, when it hosts Wheaton at 12 p.m.
