Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s Ice Hockey Falls to Elmira in Overtime, 3-2

PINE VALLEY, N.Y.— Senior Shane Haviland (Sea Girt, N.J.) scored a power play goal 2:21 into overtime and junior Kyle Curtin (St. George, Ont.) finished with 42 saves as Elmira College edged Babson College, 3-2, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center Ice Arena.

Babson, which rallied from two goals down to defeat Elmira by the same score on Friday night, dropped to 10-8-1 overall and 8-6-0 in league play, while Elmira, which is receiving votes in the latest Division III poll, improved to 10-5-2 overall and 7-4-1 in the NEHC.

Junior Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.) and sophomore Joseph Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored for the Beavers, and junior Nolan Woudenberg (Collegeville, Pa.) and graduate student Kyle Gierman (Shelby Township, Mich.) added assists. Sophomore Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.) registered 22 saves in goal in the setback.

Graduate student Ryan Reifler (Binghamton, N.Y.) and first-year Myles Yearwood (Toronto, Ont.) potted goals for the Soaring Eagles, graduate student Chance Gorman (Flemington, N.J.) produced two assists, and senior Nathan Young (New Market, Md.) and juniors Matt York (Ottawa, Ont.) and Tyler Schwindt (New Hamburg, Ont.) chipped in with one assist each in the win.

Babson pulled out to an early lead six minutes into the contest. After Woudenberg fired a shot from the right point that was blocked, Driscoll scored on the rebound on a shot through a screened goalie, his fifth goal of the season.

Elmira answered with a goal six minutes later to tie things up. Young won a battle for the puck along the left boards in the Babson zone, sent a pass to the bottom of the left circle to Reifler, who beat Rosado glove side inside the far post to make it 1-1 after one.

The hosts took their first lead of the day with a power play goal early in the second stanza. Schwindt found Yearwood in front with a pass from behind the net and Yearwood buried a shot to make it 2-1 at the 3:56 mark.

The Green and White answered with a shorthanded goal to tie the game. Kramer recovered a loose puck in his own end, skated length of the ice on a breakaway and beat Curtin for the unassisted marker, his fifth goal of the season. Babson had a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal in the third period and each team had a power play attempt, but the teams were still tied at the end of regulation.

The Soaring Eagles nearly won it a minute into the extra session but a shot by senior Bailey Krawczyk (Elmira, N.Y.) hit the post. Babson was called for a slashing penalty at 1:51, and 30 seconds later Haviland ripped a shot from the left circle past a screened Rosado for the game-winner.

Babson wound up with a 44-22 advantage in shots on goal, but the Beavers were 0-for-6 on the power play while Elmira scored twice in four attempts with the man advantage.

After four straight road games, the Beavers return home to host Norwich in an NEHC series next Friday and Saturday at the Babson Skating Center. Elmira is home again next weekend, hosting Salve Regina.
