Game Recap: Field Hockey |

No. 3 Field Hockey Edged by No. 8 Williams in OT, 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Junior Pilar Torres (Madison, N.J.) scored the only goal of the game 2:50 into overtime to help No. 8 Williams College defeat No. 3 Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at Williamson Field.

Babson suffered its first loss of the season to drop to 3-1, while Williams improved to 3-0 with its third consecutive shutout.

Senior goalkeeper Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made a season-high nine saves for the Beavers, who were outshot 22-9 on the day.

Junior Kiki Higgins (Weston, Mass.) recorded an assist and first-year Ellie Smith (Wayland, Mass.) made three saves to lead the Ephs.

Scoreless through 60 minutes of regulation, Torres converted the only scoring chance of the extra session. After taking a penalty corner insert from Higgins she fired a shot from just inside the top of the arc that tricked through traffic in front of the cage and in for her second goal of the year in the 63rd minute.

Furmanek, who faced more shots on Sunday than she had in Babson's first three games combined, was terrific in the loss. She kicked away a blast by Higgins midway through the first quarter and then came off her line to deny junior Natalia Nolan (Madson, Conn.) with a sliding pad save with less than four minutes to go in the second.

Furmanek made five of her nine stops in the third quarter, which included racing away to poke the ball away from Higgins on a breakaway before pushing away junior Anna Miller's (Weston, Mass.) rebound attempt midway through the stanza. She also made back-to-back saves on sophomore Madeline Rowland (Wilmington, Del.) following a corner with just over two minutes to go in the period.

Smith made two of her three saves in the first half for Williams, stepping up to kick away a shot by sophomore Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) just over six minutes into the first quarter and graduate student Katie Guden's (Belmont, Mass.) bid to open the scoring from a tight angle along the end line three minutes into the second. Beavers' junior Laney Reed (West Chester, Pa.) missed just wide of the right post in the 20th minute and classmate Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) was just wide of the near post in the closing seconds of the third period.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson visits No. 9 Bates at 6 p.m., while Williams travels to Smith at 6:30 p.m.
