No. 4 Field Hockey Wins Tough Battle Against No. 7 Bates, 3-0

LEWISTON, Maine — Senior Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) tallied a goal and an assist as No. 4 Babson College pulled out a 3-0 victory over No. 7 Bates College in a battle of Top 10 field hockey teams Wednesday evening at Campus Avenue Field.

The Beavers rebounded from their first loss of the year on Sunday to improve to 4-1 on the season while the Bobcats suffered their first setback of the campaign to drop to 2-1.

Juniors Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) and Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) also scored goals for the Beavers and senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) picked up an assist. Senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) was not forced to make any saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season.

Junior Kaili Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) made two saves in the Bates goal but suffered the loss for the Bobcats, who were outshot 9-5 in the contest, including 5-0 in shots on goal.

The Green and White needed just over a minute to get on the scoreboard. Evans collected a pass from graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) near the right endline and sent a crossing passing in front of the Bates goal where DiGiovanni buried a shot into an empty net for a 1-0 lead just 62 seconds after the opening whistle.

Babson doubled its lead on a penalty corner four minutes into the second quarter. Junior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) took the insertion from Marguerite and passed the ball to her left to Sharrow, who fired a diagonal shot to the far post where Michelotti redirected the ball into the goal for her first career marker.

The Beavers extended their lead three minutes into the third quarter on another penalty corner. After the insertion, DiGiovanni dribbled the ball into the circle but was broken up by the Bates defense. Sharrow collected the loose ball and fired a shot through traffic into back of goal for a 3-0 lead.

In a defensive battle, Bates had a 2-1 lead in shots in the first quarter, Babson had 3-1 and 4-1 shot advantages in the middle two frames and each team managed just one attempt in the final stanza. The visitors had a 9-3 lead in penalty corners, including 5-1 in the second quarter.

Babson will return home to host No. 1 Middlebury on Sunday at 12 noon at MacDowell Field. Bates will be home again next Wednesday against Thomas at 7 p.m.
