BRISTOL, R.I.— Sophomore
Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game in the 41st minute and No. 3 Babson College made it stand as the Beavers defeated Roger Williams University, 1-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday night at Bayside Field.
The Beavers registered their second straight shutout and improved to 3-0 this season, while the Hawks suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 2-1.
DiGiovanni's game-winner came on a penalty corner and was assisted by her sister, junior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.). Senior
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) was not forced to make any saves in goal to earn her program-record 23rd career shutout.
Senior Jill Haudenshield (Sykesville, Md.) made six saves in goal for the Hawks, who were outshot 19-2 in the contest, including 7-0 in shots on goal.
On the game-winning goal, graduate student
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) inserted the ball to the top of the circle, where senior
Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) pushed a pass to
Caroline DiGiovanni on the right side. Caroline teed up a shot and Helen redirected it near the right post past Haudenshield for her second goal of the season.
After a quiet first quarter, which featured just three shots between the two teams, including two from the hosts, Babson started to take control of play in the second frame. While the Beavers were unable to put the ball in the net in the stanza, they did earn all eight penalty corners while outshooting the Hawks 8-0. Only two of the Babson shots were on goal and were stopped by Haudenshield, as the teams went into the intermission scoreless.
Haudenshield made a diving stop on
Caroline DiGiovanni with nine minutes to play in the third quarter to keep it scoreless, and then made a kick save on Caroline three minutes later before the Beavers finally broke through with 4:20 on the clock.
The Green and White kept the pressure on, keeping the ball in the RWU half of the field the majority of the half, but was unable to score any further. The Beavers had a 10-0 shot advantage in the second half and took all 14 of the game's penalty corners.
Babson will be on the road again on Sunday when it travels to No. 8 Williams for a 1 p.m. match-up. Roger Williams is home again on Saturday, hosting Plymouth State at 12 p.m.
