No. 3 Field Hockey Blanks Connecticut College, 3-0

Furmanek matches program record for career shutouts

BABSON PARK, Mass.—No. 3 Babson College got goals from three different players and senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) recorded her 22nd career shutout to match the program's all-time record in a 3-0 win over visiting Connecticut College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday night at MacDowell Field.

The Beavers won their 16th straight home game dating back to last season, improving to 2-0 this fall, while the Camels start their season at 0-1.

Seniors Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored the Babson goals, and senior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) registered an assist. Furmanek finished with three saves in goal for the win.

Sophomores Bea Talbott (St. Louis, Mo.) and Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) split time in the Connecticut goal, Talbott making six first-half saves and Winemaster stopping three shots in the second half.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Evans gave the Green and White the lead just over 90 seconds into the second quarter. DiGiovanni took a long pass from senior Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) in the midfield and found Evans, who wheeled around a defender and tucked her finish back inside the right post for her first goal of the season.

The Beavers doubled their advantage less than three minutes later when DiGiovanni took advantage of a Connecticut miscue, dribbled in the circle and beat Talbott inside the near post to make it 2-0 19:16 into the match. Furmanek made her first save of the contest in the 21st minute and Babson successfully defended three straight penalty corners to maintain its two-goal edge at the break.

Winemaster made a pair of saves early in the third before Sharrow took a pass from Powers and scored her first goal of the year with a blast through traffic following a corner at the 37:35 mark. Fumanek denied Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) in the 53rd minute and pushed away a bid by junior Bridget McCann (West Hartford, Conn.) in the closing seconds to secure the shutout.

The Green and White finished with an 18-10 advantage in shots, including 12-3 in shots on goal. The Beavers had a narrow 7-6 margin in penalty corners.

Babson returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Roger Williams on Thursday at 7 p.m., while Connecticut College visits Amherst on Saturday at 12 p.m.
