BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior
Joao Araujo (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored a goal in the 81st minute and No. 20 Babson College went on to a 1-1 draw against No. 25 Amherst College in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With the deadlock, Babson remains undefeated on the season with a 3-0-5 record while Amherst moves to 3-1-2 overall with the tie.
Araujo scored his second goal in the last three games for the Beavers, and senior goalie
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made two saves between the pipes for the Green and White.
Senior Niall Murphy (Cambridge, Mass.) scored his first goal for the Mammoths and seniors Wyatt McCarthy (New York, N.Y.) and Simon Kalinauskas (Sydney Australia) registered assists. First-year Trey Sheppard (Columbus, Ohio) made five saves in goal for the visitors.
After 80 scoreless minutes, the sides combined for a frenzied finish. The Green and White drew first blood with 9:31 remaining thanks to a penalty kick after Sheppard cleaned out Beaver first-year
Phillip Finch (La Jolla, Calif.) from the top of the six-yard box. Sheppard made a diving save on Araujo's spot kick but he blasted home his own rebound for a 1-0 advantage.
Amherst struck back less than three minutes later though on a free kick by McCarthy. Kalinauskas flicked a header at the top of the box and Murphy one-timed a shot inside the left post for his second goal of the year with 6:46 to go. Babson first-year
Tidiane Thiam (Andover, Mass.) knocked away a cross and White came charging off his line to punch away a service in the waning seconds as the teams finished deadlocked.
The opening 45 minutes did not yield a goal despite both sides producing quality chances. White made a sprawling save to deny McCarthy's shot headed for the upper right corner in the 14th minute and Sheppard was forced to dive to his left to snare a bouncing header by junior
Liam Goldstein (Princeton, N.J.) in front of the right post in the 35th minute.
The Mammoths had a chance to take the lead twice early in the second half. First-year Obad Opoku (Accra, Ghana) sent a volley from just inside the top of the box wide in the 64th minute and Murphy hit the left post from the edge of the six-yard box after Kalinauskas flicked a long ball from senior Jonny Novak (London, England) into the box in the 69th minute.
Amherst took all 10 of the game's corner kicks and had a 12-9 margin in total shot attempts, but Babson had a 7-3 margin in shots on goal.
Babson is back in action with a match at local rival Brandeis on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Amherst returns to conference play on Saturday at Bates at 2 p.m.
