WALTHAM, Mass.— Graduate student
Kento Abe (Quincy, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist and senior goalie
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made three saves as No. 20 Babson College blanked longtime rival Brandeis University, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.
With the victory, Babson remains undefeated on the season with a 4-0-5 record while Brandeis dropped its second game in a row and fell to the .500 mark at 3-3-2.
Junior
Liam Goldstein (Princeton, N.J.) also scored for the Beavers while graduate student
Tyler Fidrych (Stonington, Conn.) collected two assists and classmate
James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec) added one helper in the victory.
Senior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa.) made one save in goal for the Judges, who were outshot 11-8 overall, including 4-3 in shots on target.
The Judges nearly took the lead in the 20th minute following a free kick from near the right sideline. The ball was delivered into the box where Brandeis connected on a header toward the goal but Goldstein headed it out of danger.
Babson's two goals came seven minutes apart late in the opening half. A crossing pass from Donaldson on the left side to Fidrych in the middle was redirected to Abe, who went to his right before unleashing a shot from 20 yards out that went inside the left goal post to give the Beavers the lead in the 37th minute.
With time winding down in the first half, Babson was awarded a corner kick. Abe made a short pass to Fidrych on the corner, and Fidrych sent the ball into the box, where Goldstein connected on a header that beat Wrabley into the upper left side of the goal in the 44th minute. That gave the Beavers a 2-0 heading into the half.
Each team put two shots on goal in the second half but neither could connect. A Babson attempt by sophomore
Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) in the 60th minute was broken up by a Brandeis defender, and a volley by Goldstein was punched over the goal by Wrabley in the 74th minute. Brandeis junior Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J.) had a pair of attempts denied by White in the final five minutes, a shot from the top of the box in the 85th minute and a clean look inside the box in the 89th minute.
Babson plays another non-conference road game on Tuesday at No. 5 Tufts, beginning at 7 p.m. Brandeis plays a University Athletic Association (UAA) match next Saturday at Carnegie Mellon at 1:30 p.m.
