Box Score 3 CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The Babson College men's tennis team concluded the opening weekend the 2024-25 season with three sets of singles and doubles matches against some of the top teams in the country over three days at the MIT Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Friday Highlights
The Beavers opened the weekend with doubles matches against Division I Merrimack University and Amherst College on Friday in Cambridge. Babson was victorious in two of three contests against Merrimack with seniors
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) recording an 8-4 win over Charles Robertson and Khabir Chhabria, while junior
Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.) and
Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) were 8-3 winners over Valentin Riveros and Morgan Donovan in their Babson debut.
The Green and White went 2-3 against the Mammoths as Merson and Wang pulled out an 8-7 (8-6) decision over Spencer Leung and Rex Harrison, while graduate student
Andrew Watson (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior
Alexander Weber (Baech, Switzerland) registered an 8-4 triumph over Sujit Chepuri and Cal Wider.
Sophomore
Mattias Harrell (Oslo, Norway) and first-year
Mason Nguyen (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) also picked up an 8-5 victory over Andrey Ignatyev and Bhaven Balusu of Tufts.
Saturday Highlights
Babson faced MIT and Tufts in singles play and collected one victory against each foe. Merson was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Ryan Xiao of MIT, while Wang defeated Alex Ganchev of Tufts, 6-2, 6-1. First-year
Sebastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) dropped a pair of three-set decisions falling 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 10-6 to Shrish Choudhary of MIT and 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 to Lachie Macintosh of Tufts.
Sunday Highlights
The Beavers dropped four doubles matches to Tufts, which advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals back in May before bouncing back with four victories in singles against Amherst. Lepsoe defeated Kobe Ellenbogen 6-1, 6-1 and Harrell was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Ethan Ohm, while both Merson and Mendoza recorded three-set victories.
Merson downed Edred Opie 6-1, 6-7 (0-7), 10-8 and Mendoza turned back Harrison 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 for his first collegiate singles win.
Babson returns to action next Friday when it begins play in the ITA New England Championships at Tufts.
