Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Goldstein's Late Goal Helps No. 20 Men's Soccer Draw with No. 22 WPI, 1-1

WORCESTER, Mass.—Junior Liam Goldstein (Princeton, N.J.) scored off a corner kick in the 89th minute to help No. 20 Babson College earn a 1-1 draw with No. 22 WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

With the draw, Babson remains unbeaten at 3-0-4 while WPI is now 5-2-1. Both teams begin conference play at 0-0-1. The Green and White is unbeaten through its first seven games for the first time since 1991 when it started 7-0-1 on the way to advancing to the NCAA Tournament semifinals.

Senior goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made two saves, both in the second half, for the Beavers.

Graduate student Aaron Vaz (Medford, Mass.) had a goal and junior Evan Haas (Concord, N.H.) recorded an assist for the Engineers, who got four saves from graduate student Julian Quaresima (East Meadow, N.Y.) in the game.

Vaz broke the scoreless deadlock just past the hour mark with his second goal of the season to put the hosts in front. Haas headed down senior Anthony Previte's (Andover, Mass.) corner kick toward goal from the edge of the six-yard box and Vaz raced in front of White to knock for a 1-0 lead.

The WPI defense blocked a shot by sophomore Ted Rosenfeld (Morristown, N.J.) following corner kick by graduate student Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) in the 66th minute and Quaresima made a save on sophomore Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) in the 81st minute fore the Green and White equalized with just 1:38 remaining in the match. Kalishman's corner kick took a deflection toward the back post and Goldstein buried a header with Quaresima charging off his line for his first marker of the year.

Both sides exchanged shots throughout the opening stanza before Babson graduate student James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec) got a header off of a free kick that was steered away by Quaresima. The Engineers then responded with a Fabio Bastida-Andreeu (Logrono, Spain) header that hit the crossbar in the 34th minute keeping the match even. Junior Tora Ito (Hopkinton, Mass.) recorded the final look in the first half but strayed wide to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Vaz hit the crossbar with a volley in the 49th minute and seconds later Brady Burch's (South Deerfield, Mass.) header crept through White's hands and had to be cleared off the line by Goldstein. Quaresima came up big less than seven minutes later when he raced off his line to punch away a 40-yard free kick by Beavers' junior James Modiano (Montclair, N.J.).

Both teams finished with 13 shots and the Green and White held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Amherst at 4 p.m., while WPI takes on Wentworth at 7 p.m.
