BABSON PARK, Mass.— First-year
Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute and Babson College made it stand as the game-winner, defeating Gordon College, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson picked up its first win of the season, upping its record to 1-3-0, while Gordon had a three-game unbeaten streak stopped and dipped to 2-2-1 on the season.
Lee's goal came unassisted on one of her team-high four shots on goal. Senior
Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made a season-high six saves at the other end of the field for her first shutout of the season and second of her career. Junior Emily Bengtson (Anthem, Ariz.) made seven saves for the Fighting Scots but suffered the tough-luck loss.
Lee intercepted a clearing attempt from a free kick just outside the box and ran past a defender before sending a left-footed attempt towards the goal. The ball snuck through another defender and past the keeper and found the net just inside the right post.
Babson had a 16-10 margin in shots, including 9-6 in shots on goal. The Beavers had a slim 6-5 margin in corner kicks.
Ryan made a pair of key early saves on Eowyn Lapp (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in the sixth minute to keep the game scoreless. Bengtson made a pair of kick saves against Lee from the left side to highlight her first-half performance.
Ryan opened the second half with saves of junior Ava Forbes-Smith (Bridgewater, Mass.) and classmate Ada Forbes (New Haven, Conn.). Bengtson made her final stop on a header by sophomore
Janiya Ocampo (Pawtucket, R.I.) with 14 minutes remaining.
The Beavers look to make it two wins in a row with a road game at Endicott on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Gordon returns home to host SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
