Caroline DiGiovanni Leads No. 3 Field Hockey Past Endicott in Season Opener, 4-2

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored three goals as Babson College doubled up Endicott College, 4-2, in the field hockey season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

The Beavers won their fourth straight season opener to start the campaign at 1-0, while the Gulls are off to an 0-1 start to the year.

Sophomore Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, and senior Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made three saves in goal to record the win.

Junior Tori Swanson (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore Natalia Arjone (Ashland, Mass.) scored goals for the visitors and senior Maddie Young (Hingham, Mass.) recorded an assist. Junior goalie Alexis DeMattia (Methuen, Mass.) made nine saves in 48 minutes of action and first-year Faith Minickene (Madison, Conn.) picked up one save in relief.

After a scoreless first quarter, DiGiovanni put the Beavers on the scoreboard four minutes into the second frame. Her first shot, set up on a pass from senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), was stopped by DeMattia but DiGiovanni pounded in the rebound. The Green and White made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when Braren intercepted an Endicott clear just inside the scoring circle and rifled a shot past a defender and DeMattia into the right side of the goal.

Endicott got on the board on a penalty corner with just 1:15 to go in the second quarter. Young blasted a shot from the top of the circle and Arjone redirected it in front past Furmanek to cut the score in half by the intermission, 2-1.

Babson regained its two-goal lead two minutes into the third quarter as DiGiovanni dribbled around two defenders before firing a shot just inside the left post. Endicott had a scoring opportunity with a 2-on-0 break but graduate student Brooklyn Lamb (Natick, Mass.) hustled back to break up the play. The Gulls pulled back to within one goal with just over a minute to go in the third quarter when Swanson buried a rebound from the left side to make it 3-2 after three.

DiGiovanni finished off her hat trick a minute into the fourth quarter on a scramble in front, knocking the ball past a fallen goalie as Babson regained its two-goal lead.

The Beavers finished with a 23-7 advantage in shots, including 14-5 in shots on goal, and an 11-4 margin in penalty corners.

The Green and White are back in action on Tuesday against Connecticut College at 6 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Endicott plays its home opener on Wednesday against Salem State at 7 p.m.
