ATLANTA — No. 15 Babson College captured victories in two out of three doubles matches but saw No. 3 Emory University bounce back with wins in five out of six singles matches to take a 6-3 triumph over the Beavers in a non-conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon at The WoodPEC on Emory's campus.
With the setback, the Beavers lost for the second time in their last three outings and fell to 7-3 on the season. Emory won its seventh straight match and improved to 10-3 this spring.
Sophomore
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) secured victories in both singles and doubles for the Beavers, winning in straight sets at second singles after teaming up with junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) for a verdict at number one doubles. Senior
Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) and first-year
Dana Kamal (Cairo, Egypt) produced a win at number three doubles for the Green and White.
Cristiani and Soffer, ranked No. 2 in Division III doubles, took down the fifth-ranked duo of sophomore Emily Kantrovitz (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Ana Cristina Perez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) at number one doubles, 8-4. Moschella and Kamal pulled out a win over first-year Yanire Marte (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Izzy Antanavicius (Villanova, Pa.) at number three, 8-7 (7-4), but sophomore Iris Berman (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Eliza McPherron (Weston, Mass.) defeated first-year
Chaniel Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior
Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) at number two, 8-5.
In the marquis match-up at number one singles between sixth-ranked Kantrovitz and 17th-ranked
Olivia Soffer, it was Kantrovitz taking a 6-4, 6-1 win. Third-ranked Cristiani won a 6-3, 6-3 verdict over seventh-ranked Perez at number two, and the Eagles breezed to straight-set wins in the other four singles battles. Senior Ilayda Baykan (Istanbul, Turkey) downed sophomore
Kamila Stasiowska (Burlington, Conn.) at number three, 6-2, 6-1; Antanavicius defeated
Chaniel Soffer at number four, 6-2, 6-2; Berman knocked off junior
Laetitia Rizk (Beirut, Lebanon) at number five, 6-2, 6-0; and McPherron posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Moschella at number six.
The Beavers will play another ranked team on Saturday against Trinity (Texas) at 12 p.m. in a match played at Emory.
