BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore
Connor Doan (Pasadena, Texas) struck out five over 7.1 innings and graduate student
Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior
Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) both drove in a pair of runs to help Babson College defeat visiting UMass Boston, 7-3, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.
With its third straight victory, Babson improves to 19-9 overall. UMass Boston, which lost for just the third time in the last 10 outings, dips to 21-11 on the year.
Tanner was 2-for-5 with a two-run double, first-year
Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and graduate student
John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) had a two-hit day that included an RBI double. Senior
Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) also singled, walked and scored twice in support of Doan, who gave up just two runs in the longest outing of his career to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Senior Aidan Blake (Lakeville, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and junior Mariano Jimenez (Waltham, Mass.) finished with two hits, including a double, for the Beacons. Senior Logan Lawrence (Taunton, Mass.) dropped to 1-1 on the year with the loss after giving up three runs over the first two innings.
Doan snared a line drive right back out him with runners on second and third to get out of the top of the second and the Green and White rewarded him with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior
Ryan Hvozdovic (Hillsborough, N.J.) drew a two-out walk and got to third on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on D'Avanzo's single to left. Julian got plunked and both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before coming around thanks to a two-run single to right by Santos to make it 3-0.
First-year Elliot Miles (Portsmouth, N.H.) trimmed the UMass Boston deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth, but Babson answered with back-to-back doubles by senior
Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and Nowak to regain its three-run advantage in the fifth. Blake homered to right with one out in the top of the eighth and junior Mike Meagher (Marstons Mills, Mass.) brought home sophomore Nick Farnacci (Farmingdale, N.Y.) with an RBI ground out to make it a one-run game before Beavers' senior
Jimmy Weick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) got Jimenez to fly out to center with the potential tying run on first.
Beacons' senior Brendan Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass.) recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the frame before Babson took advantage of a pair of defensive miscues. D'Avanzo reached on a throwing error and came all the way around to score from first when Julian's single to center was misplayed. Santos drew a walk and Tanner doubled off the wall in left center as the hosts pushed their lead to 7-3.
Both teams return to action on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. as Babson hosts Johnson & Wales, while UMass Boston travels to No. 1 Endicott.
