Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

No. 11/9 Men’s Lacrosse Clinches NEWMAC Regular Season Title with Win over Clark, 21-2

WORCESTER, Mass.— Graduate student Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) tallied five goals and two assists in a six-minute span in the second quarter and No. 11 USILA/No. 9 USA Lacrosse Babson College kept Clark University off the scoreboard for the final 56 minutes in a 21-2 victory in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Association (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.

With the victory, Babson improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the NEWMAC, clinching its second straight regular season title and the top seed in this year's post-season tournament. Clark fell to 4-10 overall and 1-5 in league play.

Rainville matched his season high with nine points on five goals and four assists and first-year Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn.) posted a season-high five points on three goals and two assists. Junior Colt Bordonaro (Portland, Ore.) scored three times, senior Max Mallett (Alexandria, Va.) added a pair, and a dozen different Beavers scored goals in the victory. Graduate student James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) won 13-of-19 face-offs and collected 10 ground balls, senior Brendan Maher (Melrose, Mass.) produced three caused turnover and four ground balls, and senior Bryan Hanley (Plainview, N.Y.) made a career-high 11 saves in goal in the victory.

Senior Attilio Lavecchia (Hamden, Conn.) and junior Matt Wells (Rutland, Mass.) scored goals for the Cougars, and senior Colin Howard (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Brett Newman (Cheshire, Conn.) registered assists. Sophomore Patrick O'Rourke (Newton, Mass.) won nine face-offs, senior Jason Tautel (Greenwich, Conn.) caused a pair of turnovers, and graduate student Zachary Conant (Hanson, Mass.) picked up a team-high four ground balls. Three Clark goalies combined for 21 saves in goal, including 11 by senior Casey McCullough (Bryn Mawr, Pa.).

After senior Sammy Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) scored the first goal of the game for Babson in the first minute, upset-minded Clark fired in the next two goals to take the lead. That ended up as the only highlight for the hosts, as it was the Beavers the rest of the way. Mallett tied it up three minutes later, senior Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) gave the Beavers the lead for good with five minutes to go in the opening quarter, and Bordonaro went back-to-back to put the visitors up 5-2 after one frame.

Rainville scored the first two goals of the second quarter and set up Wang for the next one. Following a Turco unassisted goal after winning the ensuing face-off, Rainville ripped off three in a row, including a man-up goal, as Babson's lead swelled to 12-2. Rainville set up Wang for another and Mallett scored with nine seconds left in the half to give Babson a 14-2 margin at the break.

The Beavers scored three times in the third, one each from Wang, senior Ford Carney (Garden City, N.Y.), junior Riley Shaw (Duluth, Ga.) and first-year Camden Matthews (Westford, Mass.), and coasted home with fourth quarter strikes from Bordonaro, first-year Rowan Mondello (Wakefield, Mass.) and sophomore Braden Reilly (Reading, Mass.).

Babson finished with a 64-26 advantage in shots and 50-27 margin in ground balls. The Beavers scored once in two opportunities with the extra man and killed off all five chances for Clark.

The Green and White wrap up the regular season next Saturday against Coast Guard at 1 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Clark concludes its season next Saturday at Emerson at 1 p.m.
