No. 11/15 Men’s Lacrosse Sinks Coast Guard in Regular Season Finale, 13-7

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Graduate student Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) and junior Max Mallett (Alexandria, Va.) combined for five goals and four assists while grad student James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) and senior Grey Sunderland (Bellevue, Wash.) combined to win 16-of-24 face-offs and pick up 17 ground balls as No. 11 USILA/No. 15 USA Lacrosse Babson College defeated the Coast Guard Academy, 13-7, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Association (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse regular season finale Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, Babson completes the regular season at 13-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play to earn its second straight regular season title and third in four years. Coast Guard drops its fourth game in a row and falls to 2-11 overall and 1-6 in NEWMAC games.

Rainville finished with four goals and an assist, Mallett contributed a goal and three helpers, and senior Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) notched three goals in the victory. Senior Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.) scored twice, senior Topher Bower (Chicago, Ill.) and first-year Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn.) added a goal and an assist each, while Sunderand was 9-of-13 and Turco was 7-of-11 at the face-off X for the Beavers. Senior Bryan Hanley (Plainview, N.Y.) made 11 saves in goal for the Green and White.

First-year Eric Key and junior Ryan Hunter (Bethesda, Md.) accounted for all seven goals for the Bears, Key with four goals and an assists and Hunter with three goals and two assists. Senior Jack Bragaw caused three turnovers, juniors Oliver Bolton (Darien, Conn.) and Nick Butler (Northport, N.Y.)) picked up five and four ground balls, respectively, and senior Matt Reheuser (Haymarket, Va.) and sophomore Dustin Miller (Tyler, Texas) combined to make 20 saves in the Coast Guard goal.

The Beavers led 2-1 late in a relatively quiet first quarter before Wang and Tauss fired in goals in the final two minutes to put the hosts up 4-1. The Green and White tallied the first three goals of the second quarter, one each by Rainville, Karsh and Tauss, to extend the lead to 7-1 with 10 minutes to go in the half.

Coast Guard came alive when Key rattled off three straight goals in a span of two minutes, with assists from junior Mason LaForte (Waterford, Conn.), Hunter and first-year Mason Tucker. Hunter tacked on one more with 13 seconds left in the quarter as the Bears pulled to within 7-5 at the break.

Babson tightened up the defense in the second half and kept the Bears off the scoreboard in the third quarter while scoring four times. Tauss put one in midway through the frame and Rainville, Mallett and senior Max Iannone (Westport, Conn.) found the back of the net as the Beaver lead grew to 11-5. The teams alternated goals in the fourth quarter with Rainville and Bower scoring for the Beavers and Hunter scoring twice for the Bears.

The hosts finished with a 60-35 margin in shots and 40-35 advantage in ground balls. Babson was 29-of-30on clears while holding Coast Guard to 29-of-38.

Babson is the top seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament and will host a semifinal contest on Thursday at 7 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Coast Guard wraps up its season with a non-conference match-up on Tuesday atgainst crosstown rival Connecticut College at 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES
• Babson has won three straight and is 7-3 all-time against Coast Guard in a series that dates back to 2015.
• The Beavers are 7-0 in home games this season and have won 11 in a row at MacDowell Field dating back to last season.
• The Green and White are 12-0 this season when leading at halftime and 12-1 when winning at least 50 percent of the face-offs.
• Rainville (61-21-82) became the third player in program history to register at least 80 points in a season, following Josh Shaffer (102 points in 1995) and Will Spangenberg (87 points in 2023).
