Offense Carries Baseball Past Tufts, 10-7

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Seniors Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.), classmate Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and first-year Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) combined to drive in eight runs as Babson College defeated visiting Tufts University, 10-7, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Govoni Field.

With its 13th win in the last 15 games, Babson improves to 16-8 on the year. Tufts, which has dropped five straight contests, slips to 13-14 overall.

Santos went 3-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored, D'Avanzo was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Savage doubled and knocked in a pair of runs for the Beavers. Junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) finished 2-for-3 with two walks, while senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) singled and scored twice in the win.

First-year AJ Lysko (Canton, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, junior Henry Fleckner (Weston, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two RBI and first-year Malachi Pena (Albuquerque, N.M.) also drove in a pair of runs for the Jumbos. Senior Ozzie Fleischer (Fort Worth, Texas) singled twice and scored once in the loss.

Down 2-1 going to the bottom of the second, Julian scored on an infield single by D'Avanzo and Savage followed with a two-run double to right to give the Green and White a 4-2 advantage. The Beavers added to their lead with five more runs in the third.

Guest led off with a double down the left field line and later scored on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Wilson to make it 5-2. Julian reached on an infield single to load them up again and Santos came through with a bases-clearing triple to stretch the Beavers' lead to 8-2.

Fleckner drew a bases-loaded walk and Fleischer scored on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth to pull Tufts within 9-4. Lysko homered to right in the fifth to make it a four-run game before Babson answered back in the bottom of the frame, getting an RBI single from Tanner to extend the margin back to 10-5.

The Jumbos used an RBI ground out by Pena and a two-out single to center by Lysko to cut their deficit to 10-7 in the sixth before the Beavers' bullpen closed the door. Senior Kyle Wolff (Stratham, N.H.) ended the sixth with a ground out, senior Jimmy Weick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) retired the side in order in the seventh and graduate student Zach Magee (Indianapolis, Ind.) retired the first five hitters he faced and then worked out of a self-induced jam with a fly ball to left to record his second save of the year.

Junior Cole Velis (Lexington, Mass.) picked up his first win of the year with an inning of relief for the Green and White. First-year Michael O'Brien (Houston, Texas) dropped to 1-3 on the year for the Jumbos after giving up four runs over 1.2 innings.

Babson is back in action on Thursday when it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m., while Tufts opens a three-game series with Trinity on Friday at 3 p.m.
