Bats Explode in Game Two as Baseball Splits Sunday Doubleheader with WPI

Beavers Rack Up Eight Extra-Base Hits After Dropping One-Run Decision in Game One

BABSON PARK, Mass.—The quartet of graduate students Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) and John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.), senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) and first-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) combined for 15 hits and 10 runs batted in in game two to help Babson College split with visiting WPI in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Govoni Field.

The Beavers defeated the Engineers 19-4 in game two after dropping the opener 4-3. Babson is now 17-9 overall and 7-3 in conference play, while WPI moves its record to 17-12-1 overall and 5-5 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: WPI 4, Babson 3
Senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) doubled and scored and Wilson singled and walked for the Beavers. Graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.) tossed his first complete game of the year but dropped to 2-2 after giving up four runs on five hits to go along with five strikeouts.

Senior Owen Radcliffe (Holliston, Mass.) struck out six over eight shutout innings to improve to 5-2 with the win and classmate Jacob Hand (Niskayuna, N.Y.) hit a three-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the eighth for the Engineers.

WPI took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Hand was plunked to start the frame and stole second before scoring on an RBI single to center by junior Tommy Burns (Morris Plains, N.J.). The Green and White left the bases loaded in the top of the second before both pitchers dominated over the next six innings.

Radcliffe retired 15 in a row before giving up Kiely's double with two outs in the top of the seventh, while Nieskens set down 16 straight hitters before WPI first-year Spencer Merrick (Abington, Mass.) singled to lead off the bottom of the eighth. Nieskens threw out Merrick trying to score on a squeeze bunt for the second out of the frame but Hand followed with a three-run shot to right center to put the Engineers in front 4-0.

The Beavers mounted a furious two-out rally in the top of the ninth to get both the potentially tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Tanner scored on a wild pitch, Kiely drove in Sadowsky with a single to left and Julian raced home on another wild pitch to make it one-run game. Junior Eric DePiero (Beverly, Mass.) ended the threat with a ground out to pick up his third save.

Game 2: Babson 19, WPI 4 (8 innings)
Nowak went 4-for-5 with a triple, a homer, three RBI and two runs scored, Wilson was 4-for-6 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored, and Julian finished 4-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored for the Green and White. Tanner doubled, tripled, knocked in three runs and scored three times and Kiely added a pair of hits and drove in two runs as Babson finished with 20 hits in the win.

Sophomore James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) allowed four runs over six hits while striking out three in 6.0 innings to improve to 4-2 on the year for the Beavers.

Junior Andrew Cash (Marlboro, Mass.) hit a two-run homer in the loss for WPI.

Nowak plated Tanner with an RBI triple to left center and Babson broke the game open with a four-run third. Tanner produced a two-run single, Nowak followed with an RBI single to left and first-year Ryan Liss (Hollywood, Fla.) brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 5-1.

Julian knocked in Wilson with a single to left in the fourth and Wilson drove in two more runs in the fifth with a two-out, two-run RBI as the Beavers' lead swelled to 8-1. Cash homered to right in the bottom of the fifth, but Babson got an RBI triple from Tanner and an RBI double from senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) as part of a three-run seventh inning to extend the margin back to 12-4.

The Green and White put the game away in the eighth sending 13 men to the plate and taking advantage of five hits, four walks and a hit batsman to push across seven more runs. Kiely started the rally with an RBI single to right that brought home sophomore Chris Basile (Miami Beach, Fla.) and then drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in sophomore Owen Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) with the final run of the inning.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. as Babson hosts Wheaton, while WPI travels across town to face Clark.
