Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Drops Two at No. 6 Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I.—Senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) finished the day with five hits but visiting Babson College dropped both ends of its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader at sixth-ranked Salve Regina University on Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

The Seahawks defeated the Beavers, 7-3, in game one and 8-5 in the nightcap. Babson, which entered the day with an 11-game winning streak, drops to 14-8 overall and 6-2 in conference play.  Salve Regina improves to 21-4 overall and takes over first place in the NEWMAC at 8-1.

Game 1: Salve Regina 7, Babson 3
Santos went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) and junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) both singled and drove in a run for the Beavers, who were held to just six hits. Graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.) fell to 2-1 on the year after giving four earned runs on six hits over 5.0 inning on the hill.

Senior Brandon Grover (Ashland, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, classmate Tyler Cannoe (Schenectady, N.Y.) singled twice and scored twice, and graduate student Hunter Yaworski (Brooklyn, Conn.) homered to lead the Seahawks. Sophomore Sean Mulligan (Verona, N.J.) fanned six and gave up just one unearned run on three hits over 7.0 innings to run his record to 6-1 on the season.

Cannoe and Grover led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles  and Salve Regina used a sacrifice bunt, an error and a sacrifice fly to grab a 2-0 lead. The hosts doubled their advantage in the third as senior Matt D'Amato (Midland Park, N.J.) produced an RBI single to center and scored two batters later on Grover's one-out double down the right field line.

First-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) brought home junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) with an RBI ground out to help Babson cut its deficit to 4-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Seahawks answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and got a solo shot from Yaworski in the sixth to extend the margin to 7-1.

The Green and White used back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Savage and Guest to get within four in the eighth, but Salve Regina senior Tommy DelVecchio (Westfield, N.J.) retired the side in order in the ninth.

Game 2: Salve Regina 8, Babson 5
Guest went 2-for-5 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored, Santos was 2-for-4 with a walk and senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs for the Beavers. Wilson added an RBI double and sophomore James Clark (Southborough, Mass.) was saddled with the loss after coming on in relief with Babson down 3-0 and the bases loaded in the bottom of the first. He struck out six and gave up three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings of work to drop to 3-2 on the year.

Yaworski doubled, homered and knocked in three runs, Cannoe singled twice and had two RBI, and Grover homered and scored three times to lead Salve Regina. Junior Jason Arrigo (Basking Ridge, N.J.) recorded seven strikeouts while allowing two runs on three hits in 5.0 innings out of the bullpen to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Grover walked, swiped a pair of bags and scored on an error before Cannoe and Yaworski produced back-to-back RBI doubles as the hosts went in front 3-0 in the bottom of the first. Clark got out of the bases-loaded jam thanks to a double play and the Beavers pulled even in the third as Julian followed Wilson's RBI double to the gap in right center with a two-run single to left center.

Grover hit a two-run blast to put Salve Regina back in front 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, but Guest answered with a two-run shot of his own to left in the top of the fifth to tie the game again. The Seahawks wasted little time going back on top though, as Yaworski hit his second homer of the day to leadoff the bottom of the fifth for a 6-5 lead.

The Green and White stranded Santos at second in the top of the sixth and the Seahawks tacked on a pair of insurance runs with two outs in the eighth thanks to an RBI single by Cannoe and a double down the right field line by Yaworski. The Beavers brought the potential tying run to the plate with two outs in the top of the ninth but DelVecchio got Guest to fly out to left to earn his first save of the season.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Lasell at 3:30 p.m., while Salve Regina takes on Clark at 3 p.m.
