NEWPORT, R.I.— The 11th-ranked Babson College women's tennis team had four players earn points in both singles and doubles on the way to sweeping Salve Regina University, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis match Saturday afternoon at the SRU Tennis Courts.
With its 12th consecutive NEWMAC regular season victory since last year, Babson improved to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Salve Regina dropped its seventh straight match and fell to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC in its first year in the conference.
Junior
Olivia Soffer (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore
Matia Cristiani (San Salvador, El Salvador) teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles before registering singles victories in the top two flights for the Beavers. Sophomore
Shyla Khattar (New Delhi, India) won her matches at fifth singles and second doubles and senior
Shanaya Naik (Mumbai, India) captured wins at sixth singles and third doubles.
The Beavers took a 3-0 lead in doubles as Soffer-Cristiani at number one and Khattar and sophomore
Grace Starcher (Morristown, N.J.) at number two both cruised to 8-0 victories. Naik and senior
Jane Wang (San Diego, Calif.) turned in an 8-4 triumph at number three for the Green and White.
Soffer, Cristiani and Khattar breezed to 6-0, 6-0 victories at numbers one, two and five singles, respectively. Senior
Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) registered a 6-2, 6-1 win at number three, sophomore
Mariana Campos (Houston, Texas) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner at number four, and Naik posted a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at number six.
The Beavers will travel to Atlanta next weekend to take on No. 5 Emory on Friday and No. 9 Trinity (Texas) on Saturday. Salve Regina will visit Clark on Friday for a NEWMAC match at 3 p.m.
