Baseball Sweeps Emerson, Extends Winning Streak to Six

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.) and senior Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) each drove in six runs as Babson College swept both games of its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Govoni Field.

The Beavers took the opener 12-2 in seven innings before defeating the Lions, 12-2 in eight innings in game two.

Babson has won six consecutive games to improve to 9-6 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Emerson, which has dropped its last 12 games, slips to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Game 1: Babson 12, Emerson 2 (7 inn.)
Savage went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four runs batted in, Tanner was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored and junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) finished 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, two RBI and two runs scored to pace the Beavers' 13-hit attack. First-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) also went 2-for-4 with a double in support of graduate student Greg Nieskens (Pine Brook, N.J.), who improved to 2-0 after giving up two earned runs on three hits over 6.0 innings.

Junior Briggs Loveland (Burleson, Texas) went 2-for-2 with a home run for the Lions. Senior Benny Guevara (Hobart, Ind.) allowed five runs on six hits over the first three innings and dropped to 1-3 on the year with the loss.

Sadowsky homered down the right field line in the second, Savage made it 2-0 with an RBI double in the third and the Green and White busted the game open with an eight-run fourth inning. Sadowsky and Wilson scored on consecutive wild pitches, Tanner plated senior Ike Kiely (Falmouth, Maine) with a single to left and Savage followed with a bases-clearing double that extended the Beavers' lead to 8-0.

Graduate student John Nowak (Pelham, N.Y.) drove in Savage with a base hit to left and Sadowsky capped the inning with an RBI double to make it 10-0. Tanner gave Babson a 12-0 advantage with a two-run single to left in the fifth before Loveland broke up Nieskens' shutout bid with a two-run blast to right in the sixth.

Game 2: Babson 12, Emerson 2 (8 inn.)
Savage was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI,  first-year Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) singled, walked twice, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice for the Beavers. Tanner tripled and drove in three runs and first-year Jason Finkelstein (Walpole, Mass.) recorded a season-high nine strikeouts over 5.1 shutout innings to improve to 3-1 on the year with the win.

Loveland went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base, while sophomore Justin Fields (Glen Ridge, N.J.) and senior Brett Benway (Fairfield, Conn.) both recorded RBI singles for the Lions. Senior Chris Lowe (Chatham, N.J.) shouldered the loss to drop to 1-2 after allowing seven runs, six of them earned, on six hits over 2.0 innings.

Up 2-0 after one, Babson got a two-run single from Santos and a two-run triple off the wall in left as part of a five-run second inning to build a 7-0 advantage. Kiely scored on D'Avanzo's sacrifice fly and senior Jack Julian (Manchester, Mass.) raced home from second on a throwing error to make it 9-0 in the fifth, and Savage hit his fifth homer of the season in the sixth as the Beavers' lead swelled to 10-0.

Emerson got an RBI single from Fields in the seventh and another RBI knock from Benway in the eighth to cut its deficit to 10-2, but senior Mike Swierczynski (Wallingford, Conn.) doubled and scored on a bases loaded walk and Wilson got plunked sending D'Avanzo home with the final run with one out in the bottom of the eighth.

Babson returns to action on Monday when it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m., while Emerson takes on Clark on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
