Second-Half Surge Pushes No. 18 Men’s Lacrosse Past MIT, 15-8

BABSON PARK, Mass.— First year Seamus Rooney (Bay Shore, N.Y.) two goals and two assists and No. 18 Babson College scored eight of the first nine goals in the second half on the way to a 15-8 victory over rival MIT in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse contest at rainy Robert Field.

With the victory, Babson extended its winning streak to five games and improved to 6-2 overall (2-0 NEWMAC) while MIT dropped its second straight and fell to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The game featured the two teams that faced off in the last two NEWMAC championship games.

Graduate student Jared Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) and first-year Camden Matthews (Westford, Mass.) scored three goals each, and senior Connor Karsh (Glenview, Ill.) and first-year Luke Wang (Simsbury, Conn.) tallied a goal and two assists apiece. Senior Jacob Tauss (San Marcos, Calif.) scored twice, and grad student James Turco (Woodbury, N.Y.) won 10-of-12 face-offs and picked up a team-high six ground balls..

Senior Sammy Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) caused four turnovers and scooped up four ground balls and senior Dillon Quinn (Spring Lake, N.J.) added three caused turnovers and five GBs for the Beaver defense. Junior goalie Alex Fascilla (Huntington, N.Y.) made 14 saves for his sixth straight double-digit save performance.

Senior Jack McCordic (Medfield, Mass.) led the Engineers with three goals and an assist, while sophomore Zach Bleil (New Canaan, Conn.) had two goals and an assist and senior Heath Nilsen (Carlsbad, Calif.) finished with a goal and two helpers. Junior Brennan Hoppa (Hampstead, N.H.) grabbed a team-high five ground balls, and graduate student David Vapnek (San Diego, Calif.) finished with 15 saves in the MIT goal.

Leading 7-4 at the half, the Beavers got back-to-back goals from Rainville to start the third quarter, including a man-up goal, and Matthews followed with consecutive man-up goals just 32 second apart to push the lead to 11-4. McCordic stopped the bleeding for MIT with 3:48 on the clock but Matthews answered right back to make it 12-5 after three frames.

The Beavers put the game away with the first three goals of the fourth quarter. Turco won the opening face-off and went right down and scored, first-year Cooper Chapman (Hingham, Mass.) followed with his first career goal, and Kalishman tacked on his second goal of the season to put Babson up 15-5 with 10 minutes remaining.

Rooney scored twice in the first three minutes of the game for an early Beaver lead. MIT scored two of the next three to cut the margin to 3-2, but Babson scored three in a row, one each by Karsh and Wang to end the first quarter and one by Tauss to start the second. McCordic and Bleil answered for the hosts before Rainville scored at the buzzer to put Babson up 7-4 at the break.

Babson finished with a 56-35 advantage in shots, including 18-3 in the third quarter. The Green and White won 17 of the 25 face-offs and went 5-of-6 on extra-man opportunities.
