Scranton Edges Baseball in Slugfest, 20-17

FORT MYERS, Fla.—Junior Justin Guest (West Windsor, N.J.) went 4-for-6 with three doubles, three RBI and three runs scored but Babson College allowed 12 runs over the final three innings and suffered a 20-17 loss to the University of Scranton in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Terry Park.

Babson, which had its two-game winning streak snapped, dips to 3-6 on the year. Scranton improves to 6-2 overall with the victory.

First-year Dante D'Avanzo (Ashland, Mass.) was 3-for-5 with four RBI, senior Tanner Santos (Bethany, Conn.) finished 2-for-5 with two walks, three RBI and four runs scored and classmate Brant Savage (Charlton, Mass.) homered and drove in three runs to lead the Beavers' 17-hit attack. Graduate student Luke Tanner (Los Angeles, Calif.), junior Walter Sadowsky (Morristown, N.J.) and first-year Alexander Wilson (Millburn, N.J.) all added two hits and combined to drive in four runs in the loss.

Senior John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with a double and seven runs batted in, while classmate Nick Reposa (Factoryville, Pa.) was 3-for-4 with two walks, two RBI and five runs scored to pace the Royals, who finished with 15 hits in addition to walking nine times.

Zarnowski gave Scranton a 4-2 lead int the top of the third with a two-run double before the Green and White answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame to go in front 6-4 thanks to back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Santos and Savage. Wilson's RBI double in the last of the fifth gave the Beavers a 7-6 edge and Guest came through with a two-out, two-run double to left in the sixth to give Babson its final lead of the game at 9-8.

Senior Jack Heineman (Abington, Pa.) plated junior Jake Elston (New Milford, Conn.) with a one-out double to right to tie the game and the Royals erupted for five two-out runs, including RBI singles by Zarnowski and first-year Jake Lopez (Oakland, N.J.) to built a 14-9 advantage. The Beavers responded by scoring four times in the bottom of the seventh though, as D'Avanzo followed up RBI singles by Santos and Tanner with a two-run double to cut their deficit to just one.

The Green and White was unable to get any closer though as Scranton responded with a five-run eighth that included a two-run single to center by Zarnowski and an RBI double to right from Lopez as its lead swelled to 19-13. Santos drove in Guest with an RBI double to center and Savage hammered his fourth home run of the year to make it a three-run game with two out in the ninth before graduate student Hunter Ralston (Duryea, Pa.) came out of the bullpen to record the final out for his first save of the year for the Royals.

Despite allowing three runs in 0.2 innings, junior Dominic Chieffalo (Norristown, Pa.) picked up his first win of the year for Scranton. Senior Jimmy Weick (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was saddled with the loss for the Beavers and is 0-1 on the year.
