No. 16 Men's Tennis Splits Dual Matches with Bryant and Nichols in Spring Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CUMBERLAND, R.I.— The 16th-ranked Babson College men's tennis team split a pair of matches to get the spring season underway on Sunday afternoon and evening, falling to Bryant University, 6-1, in the first match of the day before defeating Nichols College in the second match, 8-1, in non-conference action at the Fore Court Racquet & Fitness Club.
 
Including a pair of matches played in the fall, the Beavers are now 3-1 on the season while Bryant improves to 5-2 and Nichols falls to 2-5.

Juniors Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) captured the No. 1 doubles match for Babson over Marcus Macaulay (Glasgow, Scotland) and Diego Serra Sparrow (Lima, Peru), 6-4, but the Bulldogs won the other two matches to earn the team point in doubles for Bryant.
 
Junior Jean-Christophe Baril (Drummondville, Quebec) and first-year Daniel Baquero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) downed Babson graduate students Jonah Wilson (Gilbert, Ariz.) and Andrew Watson (Charlottesville, Va.) in the second doubles flight, 6-2, and senior Diego Trejo (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Myles Peterson (Hinesburg, Vt.) knocked off first-years Caymus Choi (Hong Kong, China) and Logan Back (Busan, South Korea) at number three, 6-1.
 
Anderson earned his second victory of the day with a 6-3, 7-5 verdict over grad student Agustin Suarez (Quito, Ecuador) at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5, but it was Bryant the rest of the way. Wilson fell to first-year Otakar Ungerman at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3; Lepsoe went down to Serra Sparrow at No. 3, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2; and first-year Mattias Harrell (Oslo, Norway) was defeated at No. 4 by Baril, 6-3, 6-1.
 
Senior Jose Gonzalez (Asheville, N.C.) took a loss to Trejo at fifth singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-8; and first-year Brandon Reznik (Boca Raton, Fla.) suffered a setback to Baquero sixth singles, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6

The Beavers opened the match by sweeping the doubles encounters. Wilson and Watson cruised to an 8-1 victory in the top slot, Harrell and Reznik breezed to an 8-2 win at No. 2, while the closest match came at No. 3 where Gonzalez and sophomore Martin Mejia (Cali, Colombia) pulled out an 8-7 verdict.
 
The Green and White took five of the six singles matches to secure the team victory. Anderson remained unbeaten on the day with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, Wilson was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 2, Mejia took a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 3, and Choi cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 4.
 
Junior Eshan Mukherjee (Basel, Switzerland) outlasted Caio Dieckmann (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) at No. 6 singles, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 11-9. The lone Nichols win came at No. 5, where Richard Hartmann Zuzio (Durban, South Africa) pulled out a win over Back, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.
 
The Beavers will play again against No. 29 Rensselaer on February 17 in Latham, N.Y.
 
MATCH NOTES
• Babson is 2-3 all-time against Bryant in a series that dates back to the 1994-95 campaign, playing for just the second time since 2001.
• The Beavers are 6-1 all-time against the Bison in a series that dates back to 2011, including wins in the last five matches. The Bison captured the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship last year and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Anderson and Lepsoe were making their season debuts for Babson after missing the fall season while studying abroad.
• Wilson leads the team in singles wins with a 10-4 record while Gonzalez is now 8-6.
