WESTWOOD, Mass.— Five members of the Babson College men's cross country program were recognized for their hard work and success in the classroom when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its 2024 Academic All-Conference team on Thursday.
Graduate student
Matthew Campbell (South Easton, Mass.) and senior
Julian Ivarra (Plano, Texas) were named Academic All-Conference for the third straight year, graduate student
Ryan Wilson (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) becomes a two-time honoree, and sophomores
John Hanscom (Hadley, Mass.) and
Ethan Jina (Carlisle, Mass.) were recognized for the first time in their careers.
A strategic management major, Campbell competed in four races for the Beavers this fall with remarkable consistency. He was Babson's fifth finisher in the UMass Dartmouth 8K race on September 21 with a time of 27:11, ran a career-best 27:09 to place 47th at the NEWMAC Championships on November 2, and was the team's fourth finisher and 73rd overall in a time of 27:11 at the NCAA East Region championships on November 16.
A business administration major, Ivarra competed in six races this fall with outstanding success. He posted a career-best fifth place at the NEWMAC Championships on November 2 with a personal PR of 25:06; earned All-Region honors for the second year in a row with a 13th place in 25:15 at the NCAA East Region championships on November 16; and became just the second runner in program history to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship on November 23, finishing 138th in 25:30.
A finance major, Wilson competed in four races for the Beavers, finishing as the team's fourth runner at the Division III Pre-Nationals on October 4 with an 8K time of 27:03, and the Connecticut College Invitational on October 19 with a season-best time of 26:54. He placed 40th at the NEWMAC Championships on November 2 with a 26:58, and crossed the line in 92nd place with a 27:28 at the NCAA East Region championships on November 16.
A finance major, Hanscom competed in six races for the Beavers this fall. He was Babson's seventh runner at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on September 21 and the Division III Pre-Nationals on October 4; ran a 27:05 to come in sixth for the team at the 8K Connecticut College Invitational on October 19; posted a career-best 26:59 to finish fifth on the team and 41st overall at the NEWMAC Championships on November 2; and ran a 27:15 to wind up fifth on the team and 79th overall at the NCAA East Region championships on November 16.
A business major, Jina trained with the team but did not appear in any varsity races. He missed several meets due to competing for the United States in the Triathlon World Championships on October 17 in Torremolinos, Spain, one of nine athletes representing the US in his age group. He ran in six races for Babson as a rookie in 2023, finishing third on the team at both the NEWMAC and NCAA East Regional Championships and posting a career-best time of 26:28.
The Babson men finished third out of nine teams at the NEWMAC Championships and ninth out of 40 schools at the NCAA East Region Championships.
Academic all-conference honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale after the 2024 spring semester, achieved second year academic status, and been a member of the team for the entire season.
