No. 7 Field Hockey Blanks Wellesley in NEWMAC Tournament Semifinal, 5-0

Evans Reaches 100 Career Points as Beavers Advance to Fifth Straight NEWMAC Tournament Final

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) scored two goals apiece and Evans registered her 100th career point as top-seeded and seventh-ranked Babson College registered a 5-0 victory over fourth-seeded Wellesley College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey tournament semifinal Thursday evening at MacDowell Field.

With their 12th straight victory, the Beavers improve to 17-3 overall while Wellesley, which defeated fifth-seeded Salve Regina Tuesday in the first round, 4-1, winds up its season at 10-10. Babson advances to the NEWMAC final on Saturday for the fifth straight season and seventh time in the last eight seasons.

Evans added an assist to her output and graduate student Sophie Croci (Columbus, Ohio) also scored for the Beavers. Graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied a pair of assists and senior Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) and graduate student Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.) added one helper each in the victory.

First-year goalie Hannah Simmonds (Austin, Texas) made three saves in the first half in the setback, and senior defender Sara Masniscalco (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) made a defensive save as well.

The Beavers jumped on top in the ninth minute when Marguerite barreled down the left side of the offensive zone and slid a pass across in front of the goal where Evans finished it off for her 13th goal of the season. Evans struck again with just 7.8 seconds left in the opening frame on a penalty corner, redirecting a pass from the top of the circle by Powers to give the Beavers a two-goal lead after one.

Babson continued to dominate play with five penalty corners in the second period, and finally broke through in the 28th minute. DiGiovanni gathered a pass from Evans on the right side and slammed the ball through the pads of Simmons to make it a 3-0 game at the break.

The defenses tightened in a scoreless third quarter as each team managed just one shot and neither was on goal. The Beaver put the game away in the fourth quarter with a pair of goals less than three minutes apart. Guden carried the ball along the left end line and found a wide open DiGiovanni in front, and she buried her second of the game and team-leading 17th of the season in the 52nd minute. Croci rounded out the scoring in the 55th minute, deflecting a cross by Marguerite into the top corner of the goal for her fifth of the season.

Babson outshot Wellesley 17-2, including 9-0 in shots on goal, and the Beavers had a 14-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Beavers will host the NEWMAC championship game on Saturday for the fifth straight season against second-seeded and 17th-ranked MIT on Saturday at 12 p.m. at MacDowell Field.
