BABSON PARK, Mass. — Senior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) tallied a goal and an assist and classmate
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) was named the tournament Most Outstanding Player as top-seeded and seventh-ranked Babson College captured its fourth straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey championship with a 3-0 victory over second-seeded and 17th-ranked MIT Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
With its 13th consecutive victory and third shutout in a row, the Beavers improve to 18-3 overall and earn the sixth tournament title in program history, securing an automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. MIT fell in the title game for the third year in a row and fall to 14-5 on the season, and will wait for a possible at large berth into the NCAAs when the tournament field is announced on Sunday night.
Senior
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made two saves in goal in the victory. Juniors
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) and
Laney Reed (West Chester, Pa.) potted goals, and senior
Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) picked up an assist for the Beavers, who outshot the Engineers, 11-9.
Sophomore Maeve Zimmer (Rockville, Md.) made five saves in the MIT goal in the setback.
Babson needed less than five minutes to get on the scoreboard on a penalty corner. Power took the insertion from graduate student
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and pushed a pass to Sharrow on the left side. Sharrow unloaded a low shot through traffic in front of the goal and off an MIT defender into the back of the cage for her sixth goal of the season.
Each team had two penalty corners the rest of the period and one more each to start the second quarter but was unable to convert. Babson was awarded another corner with just 1.5 seconds left before halftime and this time made it count. Powers sent another pass to Sharrow on the left, and her shot was deflected in front by Reed into the goal for her second goal of the season.
Neither team was able to muster any offense the first 10 minutes of the third quarter until DiGiovanni struck for Babson with four minutes to go in the period. She dribbled the ball down the left side and along the end line before snapping a shot past Zimmer inside the near post for her team-leading 18th of the season.
MIT came alive in the final four minutes of the quarter, creating five penalty corners and producing six shots. Three of the shots were blocked by the Babson defense and attempts by senior Ashley Lederman (Villanova, Pa.) and junior Maria Montione (Charlotte, N.C.) were turned away by Furmanek. The hosts outshot MIT 4-1 in the fourth quarter and held on for the shutout and the championship.
Babson finished with an 11-9 margin in total shots, including 8-2 in shots on goal. The Beavers wound up with an 11-9 advantage in penalty corners.
The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on the NCAA selection show on Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. on ncaa.com.
