MALDEN, Mass.— Junior Max Resnick (Tampa, Fla.) scored a game-tying goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation as Tufts University came from behind three times to earn a 3-3 tie against Babson College in a non-conference men's ice hockey contest Tuesday evening inside the Malden Valley Forum.
The Beavers are unbeaten in their last four games and are now 4-3-1 on the season while Tufts moves to 2-2-1 overall.
Sophomore
Sean Senier (Melrose, Mass.) and seniors
Brendan Murphy (Arlington, Mass.) and
Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) scored goals for the Beavers, junior
Will Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) registered a pair of assists, and graduate student
Johnny McElaney (Walpole, Mass.) and juniors
Sam Sibold (South Hero, Vt.) and
Ian Driscoll (Middleton, Mass.) finished with one assist apiece. Sophomore
Mason Rosado (Weddington, N.C.) made a career-high 39 saves in the draw.
First-year Jameson Klein (Apple Valley, Minn.) and sophomore Marcus Sang (Toronto, Ontario) also scored for the Jumbos, and sophomore Jon Horn (Southbury, Conn.), senior Brennan Horn (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior John Mulvihill (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) collected assists. Junior Gustave Bylin (Montclair, N.J.) made a career-high 38 saves in the Jumbo goal in the tie.
The Beavers scored the only goal of the first period on a counterattack after Holland intercepted a pass at the red line. Holland hit Sibold with a pass at the blue line, Sibold found Senier on his left, and Senier beat Bylin glove side inside the left post for his second goal of the season.
The Jumbos evened the score midway through the second frame. Klein pinched in at the right point, carried the puck toward the middle of the ice and snapped a shot through a lot of traffic in front of Rosado and into the back of the net for his first career goal at the 9:59 mark.
The Green and White regained the lead at 12:40 of the second period. McElaney picked up a loose puck in the zone and dropped a pass back to Murphy at the right point, and Murphy snapped a shot through traffic in front of the goalie that found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Tufts tied the game again at 3:36 of the third period as Sang poked a loose puck behind the net, then tried a centering pass in front but the puck deflected off a Babson stick and into the goal, evening the score at 2-2.
Babson notched a power play goal to take its third lead of the game at 6:23 of the third. Bylin made a save on a shot from the point by Holland, but George buried the rebound from the bottom of the left circle for his fourth of the season.
The Beavers appeared headed for victory but Tufts had other ideas. After pulling Bylin late for an extra skater in the final minute, Rosado made a save on Mulvihill's shot from the point, Resnick gathered the rebound and ripped a shot past Rosado to tie the game with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Babson had the only shot on goal in the 3-on-3 overtime but Senier was denied by Bylin.
Tufts finished with a 42-41 margin in shots on goal. Babson was 1-for-4 on the power play and killed off all five Tufts opportunities with the man-advantage.
Babson is back on the ice on Saturday with a road game at Williams at 3 p.m. Tufts will open play in the North Country Tournament on Saturday against host SUNY Canton at 7 p.m.
