Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Overtime Goal Pushes Williams Past Men’s Ice Hockey, 2-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.— Junior Conner Fitzpatrick (Rochester, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season four minutes into overtime to lift Williams College to a 2-1 victory over Babson College in a non-conference men's ice hockey contest Saturday afternoon inside the Lansing Chapman Rink.

The Beavers had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped and dropped to 4-4-1 on the season while Williams captured its third straight triumph to up its record to 3-2-0 overall.

Junior Brendan Kennedy (Georgetown, Ont.) scored the lone goal for the Beavers with assists from sophomore Joseph Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Danny Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.). Junior Nate Mueller (Rogers, Minn.) made 36 saves on 38 shots in his first appearance of the season but took the loss.

Senior Jack Sabre (Edina, Minn.) had a part of both Williams scores with a goal and an assist while first-years Jake McManus (Winthrop, Mass.) and Leo Schneeberg (Toronto, Ont.) picked up assists. Senior Cal Sandquist (Evergreen, Colo.) finished with 28 saves, including four in overtime, to register the victory in goal for the Ephs.

After two periods of scoreless hockey, featuring 24 saves by Mueller and 17 stops by Sanquist, the teams each put a goal on the scoreboard just 73 seconds apart early in the third period. Williams broke the deadlock at the 3:44 mark, shortly after Babson had killed off an Eph power play. Sabre took a pass in the slot from Schneeberg below the goal line on the right side and snapped a wrist shot through Mueller's pads for his team-leading third goal of the season.

The lead didn't last long as Babson countered at 4:57, when Kennedy took a pass from Cavanagh at the top of the left circle and cut to the middle before ripping a shot past Sandquist inside the left post for his team-leading fifth of the season.

Mueller made back-to-back saves on junior Conner Berg (Boston, Mass.) to keep the score tied. Williams went on to outshoot the visitors 11-8 in the third period but neither team could convert the go-ahead marker.

Babson had a 4-2 advantage in shots in the 3-on-3 overtime before Fitzpatrick converted for the Ephs. Entering the zone on a 2-on-2, Fitzpatrick dropped a pass to Sabre, who returned the pass back to Fitzpatrick in the right circle and he beat Mueller inside the left post for the game-winner.

Williams finished with a 38-29 advantage in shots on goal. Babson went 0-for-3 on the power play while holding the Ephs scoreless on its only attempt with the man advantage.

Both teams are back in action with road games on Sunday at 3 p.m. with Babson playing at Amherst and Williams traveling to No. 4 SUNY Geneseo.
