Women's Swimming & Diving Second After Day One at the Fisher Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I.—First-years Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.) and Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) each recorded a first-place finish as the Babson College women's swimming & diving team is currently in second place at the Fisher Invitational hosted by Roger Williams University. 

The Beavers totaled 384 points on Friday night, while the host Hawks are sitting in first place after eight events with 468 points. Wheaton College is third with 312 points and Eastern Connecticut State University is fourth with 130 points. 

Gilbert, senior Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, Calif.), sophomore Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) and first-year Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) got the evening started with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:39.47. Gilbert then followed it up with a season-best time of 2:11.84 to win the 200 IM. 

Daniels (1:09.10) and Gilbert (1:09.13) were separated by just 0.03 seconds in placing second in third, respectively, in the 100 breaststroke, which was followed by Turhan recording Babson's third win of the night in the 200 butterfly. She recorded her top time of the year (2:08.75) in the prelims before posting a time of 2:09.15 to take first place in the A final in the evening session. 

Sophomore Nicolette Newsome (Bridgewater, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.94, while senior Kendall Garvey (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished fourth with a time of 5:25.09. Netishen took second place in the 100 free with a season-best time of 54.20 and first-year Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.), Garvey and Newsome finished fourth through sixth in the 200 backstroke. Gershanok registered a time of 2:11.32 to place fourth, Garvey was just over four seconds behind her in fifth position and Newsome came in sixth in a time of 2:17.60. 

In addition to the Babson swimmers competing at Roger Williams, senior diver Elina Sung (Dongguan, China) took part in Boston University's Terrier Invitational on Friday where she finished 27th on the 1-meter diving board. 

Day two of competition at both the Fisher Invitational and the Terrier Invitational gets underway at 10 a.m. 

MEET NOTES
•    Turhan now ranks second on the Beavers' individual performance list in the 200 butterfly, while Gilbert ranks third in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. 
•    Newsome ranks fourth in the 500 free after setting new personal best by six seconds on Friday night, and Gershanok is up to fourth in the 200 backstroke.
