NEW YORK—First-year
Timmy Mulvey (Reading, Mass.) knocked down five three-pointers on the way to scoring a game-high 21 points as Babson College defeated Ithaca College, 64-60, at the NYU Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon inside the John A. Paulson Center.
Senior
Nate Amado (Hanson, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds while also leading all players with six assists and two steals for the Beavers. Graduate student
Felix Kloman (Ipswich, Mass.) added nine points, seven boards, four assists and a game-high three blocked shots, while first-year
Vaughn Foster (Paramus, N.J.) came off the bench to contribute six points on 3-of-4 shooting.
Senior Logan Wendell (Bradford, Vt.) and sophomore Evan Cabral (Hackensack, N.J.) both scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Bombers. Senior Aidan Holmes (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and sophomore Jaylon O'Neal (Ilion, N.Y.) both added nine points in the loss.
Despite making just two field goals over a stretch of nearly 11 minutes in the first half, the Green and White never trailed by more than three. Graduate student
Alex Stoddard (Wellesley, Mass.) scored five straight points and Mulvey followed with a triple to cap an 8-1 run for a 25-21 advantage with 2:26 to go until halftime.
First-year
Ryan Frauenheim (Manasquan, N.J.) knocked down a triple and Kloman hit a pair of free throws to extend the margin to 30-23 less than a minute before halftime, and the Beavers opened the second half with an 11-4 spurt that included consecutive hoops by junior
Timmy O'Toole (Milton, Mass.) to take their largest lead of the afternoon at 39-27 on a layup by Amado.
Ithaca closed to within three on a three-point play by Wendell at the 11:16 mark before Babson stretched the margin back to 56-46 after back-to-back three-pointers by Mulvey with 5:04 remaining. The margin was 62-55 after a layup by Foster with 34 seconds to go but the Bombers took advantage of a turnover and a missed free throw to pull within two with 0:09 left before Mulvey sealed the win by going 2-of-2 at the charity stripe with five ticks to play.
The Beavers shot 39.3 percent from the floor and outscored Ithaca 24-3 from beyond the arc while finishing with a 44-38 edge on the glass. The Bombers shot just 31 percent from the floor, which includes a dismal 1-of-17 effort (5.9 percent) from deep, but outscored the Green and White 23-8 at the free throw line.
Babson is off until November 20 when it travels to Hartford, Conn., to take on Saint Joseph at 7 p.m., while Ithaca hosts rival Cortland on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
