Women's Swimming & Diving Defeats Brandeis and Smith in Quad Meet at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass.—First-year Tuana Turhan (Lake Forest, Ill.) posted a pair of runner-up finishes as the Babson College women's swimming & diving team split a multi-team meet inside the WPI Sports and Recreation Center Pool on Friday night. 

The Beavers (3-3) defeated Brandeis University 181-93 and topped Smith College 162-131 while falling to the host Engineers (163-123) and the Coast Guard Academy, 197-87. 

Turhan finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:30.34 to finish one spot ahead of first-year Samantha Gilbert (Arlington, Va.), who posted a time of 2:35.97. Turhan also placed second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.42. 

Sophomore Sylvie Racicot (Arlington, Mass.) came in third with a time of 25.91 in the 50 free and also teamed with Turhan, senior Audrey Daniels (Santa Monica, Calif.) and first-year Julia Netishen (Exeter, N.H.) to finish as the runner-up in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:51.26. The contingent of Daniels, Netishen, senior Emily Tran (Longmeadow, Mass.) and first-year Marta Gershanok (Closter, N.J.) claimed third place in the 400 free relay, and Netishen and Gershanok were separated by less than two seconds while coming in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 backstroke. 

Senior Kendall Garvey (Wilbraham, Mass.) placed fourth in the 1000 free with a time of 11:25.42, Daniels came in fourth in the 100 breaststroke touching the wall in a time of 1:12.15 and first-year Maryan Guzman (Norwalk, Conn.) finished fifth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.74. Guzman posted a sixth-place showing in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:26.20, while Gilbert added to her third-place result in the 200 breaststroke by placing sixth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:12.92 and seventh in the 200 IM in a time of 2:20.15.  

Senior Elina Sung (Dongguan, China) finished fifth on both the 1- and 3-meter diving boards, while classmate Maggie Cassily (Rye, N.H.) was the Beavers' top finisher in the 100 back with a time of 1:03.22, which was good for seventh overall. Tran took seventh place in the 50 free (26.15), Racicot was seventh in the 100 free (56.55) and junior Vangella Randell (Holden, Mass.) came in seventh in the 1000 free and eighth in the 500 free. 

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Clark inside Morse Pool at 2 p.m.
