BABSON PARK, Mass. — No. 6 Babson College scored twice in each of the first three quarters and got goals from six different players in all on the way to a 6-0 victory over Smith College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey contest Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
The Beavers extended their winning streak to three games and improved to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play while Smith suffered its ninth consecutive setback to fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate students
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and
Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.), seniors
Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) and
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), junior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) and first-year
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) accounted for the six Beaver goals. Baroni's strike was her first career marker and came on a third-quarter penalty stroke.
First-year Emma Newman (Clark Summit, Pa.) had a busy day in goal and finished with a season-high 13 saves for the Pioneers, who were outshot 33-0, including 19-0 in shots on goal.
Marguerite put the Beavers on the board in the ninth minute following a penalty corner. She collected a rebound off a shot by senior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.), dribbled out of traffic and fired a shot through a crowd of people into the goal for her fourth goal of the season. DiGiovanni made it 2-0 less than two minutes later when she split the defense to get free and ripped a shot from the right side inside the far post for her team-leading ninth of the season.
The Green and White doubled their lead with a pair of goals in the first minute of the second quarter. Evans received a pass in the scoring zone, went to her left and made a spin move before firing a shot into the right side of the cage for her sixth goal of the campaign. Just 24 seconds later, DiGiovanni blasted a shot from the right side that hit the left post and Guden knocked in the rebound for her fourth on the season and a 4-0 Babson lead.
The Pioneers held off the Beavers the remainder of the quarter, but Babson came alive again the third frame. Marsh received a pass at the top of the circle, span past a defender and hit a back-handed shot just inside the left post for her fourth goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Babson was awarded a penalty stroke, and Baroni stepped up and snapped a shot into the upper right corner for her first goal, upping the margin to 6-0.
That turned out to be all the offense Babson would need as the Beavers used many of the reserves in the fourth quarter and Newman made three saves to prevent further damage.
The Beavers will be back on the road at Bowdoin on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. match-up in Brunswick, Maine. Smith returns home to host Clark in a NEWMAC contest on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
