BRUNSWICK, Maine — Senior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) tallied a goal and an assist as No. 7 Babson College scored three times in a five-minute span in the fourth quarter to pull out a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Bowdoin College in a non-conference field hockey contest Wednesday evening at Ryan Field.
With the victory, the Beavers extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 9-3 overall while Bowdoin suffered its fifth consecutive loss, all to nationally-ranked teams, and dropped to 3-7 on the season.
Senior
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and graduate student
Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, and grad student
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and senior
Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) picked up assists. Senior
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made one save to record the victory in goal.
Junior Mackay Bommer (Rye, N.H.) scored the first goal of the game to give the hosts the lead in the third quarter, with an assist from sophomore Clara Noyes (Lexington, Mass.). Junior goalie Lauren O'Donald (West Springfield, Mass.) made three saves in goal but shouldered the loss.
Each team managed just one shot on target in a defensive-minded and scoreless first half. Noyes teed up a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner in the 20th minute, but the shot was deflected and Furmanek kicked it out of harm's way.
Evans came into the zone on a 2-on-1 break in the 27th minute and dribbled around the goalie but her shot attempt went wide. First-year
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) then stole the ball at the 25-yard line 30 seconds later and dribbled into the scoring zone and fired a shot from just inside the circle that was kicked away by O'Donald at 28:20.
The Polar Bears broke the deadlock on a penalty corner midway through the third quarter. Noyes took the insertion at the top of the circle and unleashed a shot toward the goal and Bommer redirected the ball near the right post past Furmanek to put Bowdoin in top, 1-0.
Babson tied the game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter on a penalty corner. Junior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) took the insertion on the right side of the circle and ripped a cross-field pass to Sharrow on the left side, and she unleashed a shot from just inside the arc. Sharrow's shot was blocked but Guden pounced on the rebound and flipped the ball past O'Donald to level the score at 1-1.
The Beavers pulled ahead three minutes later on another corner. Junior
Ellie Powers (Bethlehem, Pa.) sent the insertion to Sharrow of the left and she fired another shot toward the goal. Sharrow's shot bounced off the left post and came out to Evans on the right side, and she spun around and pounded the ball into the empty net to give the Beavers their first lead of the game with 7:17 remaining.
The Green and White tacked on an insurance goal less than a minute and a half later yet on another corner. Marsh took the insertion from Marguerite at the top of the circle and nudged a pass to Sharrow, this time in the middle, and she unloaded shot that made its way through traffic in front and into the back of the cage to give the Beavers a two-goal lead with 5:45 to play. Bowdoin was unable to mount any offensive threat the rest of the way.
Babson finished with a 12-3 margin in shots, including 6-2 in attempts on goal, and the Beavers took 12 of the 17 penalty corners in the game.
The Beavers will be back on the road on Saturday with a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Salve Regina, beginning at 12 noon. Bowdoin travels to Hartford, Connecticut, on Saturday for an 11 a.m. encounter at Trinity.
