CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Graduate student
Kento Abe (Quincy, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute to help No. 11 Babson College defeat MIT, 2-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Roberts Field.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 10-1-6 overall and 5-0-1 in league play. The Beavers also extended their conference unbeaten streak to 28 matches. MIT is now 7-8-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the NEWMAC with loss.
Graduate student
James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec) also scored and sophomore
Ted Rosenfeld (Morristown, N.J.) picked up his first assist of the year for the Beavers. Senior goalkeeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made one save in the victory.
First-year Jonah Gurion (Rye, N.Y.) had a goal and graduate student Adam Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) picked up an assist for the Engineers. Sophomore goalkeeper Paolo Mangiafico (Miramar, Fla.) stopped two shots in the loss.
Donaldson opened the scoring just 2:07 into the match when he caught Mangiafico well off his line and drilled a 50-yard shot over his head and into the open net for his fourth goal of the season. MIT equalized in the 23rd minute though on Gurion's sixth marker of the fall. First-year Shikhar Motupally (Avon, Conn.) helped force a turnover and carried the ball through the midfield before hitting Snowdon, who powered through a Babson defender and laid the ball off to his left for Gurion, who blasted a shot under the crossbar.
Engineers' senior Jack Minor (Boca Raton, Fla.) denied Beavers' graduate student
Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) by sliding in behind Mangiafico to clear a ball off the goal line in the 24th minute. Babson junior
Liam Goldstein (Princeton Junction, N.J.) then cleared Gurion's shot off the line after White collided with a defender charging off his line in the 28th minute to keep the game on level terms.
The Green and White went in front for good in the 75th minute on Abe's team-leading sixth goal of the season. Abe received a return pass from Rosenfeld and took one touch before drilling a right-footed shot from 20 yards inside the left post for his fourth game-winning marker.
Babson had a chance to tack on an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when its was awarded a penalty kick after graduate student
Tyler Fidrych (Stonington, Conn.) was fouled on a header in the box, but Abe was unable to convert.
The Beavers finished with an 11-8 edge in shots and attempted five of the six corner kicks in the match.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Clark, while MIT visits WPI.
