Women’s Soccer Capitalizes on McAughan’s First Career Goal to Defeat Smith, 1-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. — First-year Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.) scored her first career goal in the 67th minute and the defense registered its fourth consecutive shutout as Babson College held on for a 1-0 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the victory, the Beavers are unbeaten in their last five games (3-0-2) and improved to 5-4-5 overall and 3-1-3 in the NEWMAC while Smith had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 5-8-1 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play.

Senior Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made four saves in goal for the Beavers to register her sixth clean sheet of the season. The defensive unit, led by senior Laura Lukowicz (Coventry, R.I.), junior Gabby Michalski (East Longmeadow, Mass.), and sophomores Jadyn Mapura (East Hanover, N.J.) and Priscilla-Rose Men-Martin (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) held the Pioneers to 10 shots.

Junior Skylar Smith (Carlisle, Mass.) made seven saves in goal for the visitors but took the loss.

Babson had an 11-5 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes but neither team could put a ball in the back of the net. The Beavers had an excellent opportunity in the 20th minute as sophomore Olga Metelkine (Marlboro, N.J.) put a shot on goal that was saved by Smith and first-year Josie Lee (Duxbury, Mass.) hit the rebound off the left goal post.

The Green and White had another good chance with a minute remaining in the half when junior Meredith Greeley (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) broke free down the left side for an uncontested shot from 15 yards out but Smith was there for the save.

Ryan made a key save on senior Karenna Kung (Salem, Conn.) early in the second half to keep the game scoreless. The Beavers finally broke through in the 67th minute when McAughan collected a loose ball and fired a shot past Smith into the left corner for her first career goal.

Babson nearly scored again in the 73rd minute when Greeley curled a corner kick from the right side that forced Smith to make a leaping save. Senior Emma Mumby (Westborough, Mass.) followed with a shot of her own that was also cleared away by Smith.

The Beavers finished with a 19-10 advantage in total shots, including 8-4 in shots on goal. Each team registered three corner kicks.

The Green and White will face a tough challenge on Wednesday with a visit to No. 5 MIT at 4 p.m. Smith returns home to host Coast Guard on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
