CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Senior Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) scored a pair of goals to lead fourth-ranked MIT to a 4-0 victory over Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Field.
With the loss, the Beavers had their five-game unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 5-5-5 overall and 3-2-3 in NEWMAC play while the Engineers remained undefeated in conference games (8-0-0) and moved to 14-1-1 overall.
Senior
Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made four saves in goal in the setback. The Green and White managed just four shots overall and two attempts on goal, one each by senior
Emma Mumby (Westborough, Mass.) and first-year
Lillian McAughan (Bellevue, Wash.).
First-year Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.) made two saves to register her third clean sheet for the Engineers. Senior Lauren Davis (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) and sophomore Emma Wang (San Carlos, Calif.) produced goals in the win while senior Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) collected a pair of assists and senior Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) and junior Alice Vranka (Bronxville, N.Y.) added one helper each.
MIT needed less than two minutes to get on the board and less than six minutes to go up by two goals. Barnouw sent a corner kick from the right side into the box, and Davis used a header to send the ball back into the right corner for the early lead at 1:55. English then got a pass from Rowlett in the box behind the Babson defense and knocked it back to Rowlett, who chipped a left-footed shot past Ryan into the upper left side for a 2-0 margin at 5:35.
The Beavers settled down and held the Engineers at bay until the final minute of the half, when Wang ripped a shot from 25 yards out that beat Ryan inside the left post to send the hosts into the break with a 3-0 lead.
The Engineers tacked on another goal in the first three minutes of the second half as English delivered a pass from the right side to Rowlett in front, who settled the ball before letting go an uncontested shot past Ryan into the back of the net.
The Green and White showed some life midway through the second half as McAughan got a shot off in traffic that was corralled by Noll in the 68th minute. Mumby then pounced on a loose ball in the crease and put a shot on goal that was denied by Noll in the 72nd minute.
MIT finished with a 13-4 advantage in total shots, including 8-2 in shots on goal, and the hosts had a 7-3 margin in corner kicks.
The Beavers return home to host Salve Regina in a conference match-up on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hartwell-Rogers Field. MIT goes on the road on Saturday evening with a 7 p.m. contest at WPI.
