BABSON PARK, Mass. — Graduate student
Katie Guden (Belmont, Mass.) tallied two goals and added an assist to lead No. 7 Babson College to a 6-0 victory over Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
The Beavers extended their winning streak to seven games and improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play while Springfield dropped its second straight conference game to fall to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the NEWMAC.
Graduate students
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) and
Sophie Croci (Columbus, Ohio), senior
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.), first-year
Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) all scored one goal in the victory, and junior
Alex Michelotti (Englewood, Colo.) and senior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) collected assists for the Beavers, who outshot the visitors 32-0.
Junior Kaitlyn Parent (Glastonbury, Conn.) and senior Neilee Hess (Franklin, Mass.) had respectable performances in the Springfield goal, Parent making nine saves in the first 39 minutes and Hess stopping six of seven shots over the final 21 minutes.
Guden put the Beavers on the scoreboard four and a half minutes into the contest, knocking in a rebound after Parent denied shots by Baroni and Evans. Parent helped keep Babson off the board with several strong saves over the next 18 minutes through the middle of the second period.
Marguerite and Evans scored back-to-back goals in a span of three minutes and 15 second as the Babson lead grew to 3-0. Michelotti fed Marguerite with a pass just inside the top of the scoring circle, and Marguerite unloaded a blast that Parent got a piece of but could stop and it ended up in the top left corner of the cage for her sixth goal of the season with 7:45 on the second quarter clock.
Junior
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) dropped a pass from the left goal line to Guden inside the left circle, and she pushed a pass to Evans in front of the goal. Evans spun around that rocketed a shot past Parent for her ninth of the year to make it 3-0 with 4:29 remaining in the half.
The Green and White extended the lead to 4-0 five minutes into the second half when Baroni took a penalty stroke and ripped a shot into the upper right corner, her second successful penalty stroke and fourth goal of the season. The Beavers scored again four minutes later on a penalty corner when Sharrow fired a shot from the right side and Guden redirected the shot in front of the goal past Parent for her eighth of the season and a 5-0 margin with six minutes to go in the third quarter.
Babson rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter on another penalty corner. Hess made a save on a shot by Sharrow and Croci buried the rebound for her third goal of the season with 5:41 remaining.
The Beavers will play their third straight home game on Tuesday, hosting crosstown rival Wellesley at 6 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Springfield also plays again on Tuesday at 6 p.m., hosting Wheaton at Stagg Field.
