DiGiovannis lead No. 7 Field Hockey Past Wellesley, 4-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Junior Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) and sophomore Helen DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.) combined for three goals as No. 7 Babson College registered a 4-1 victory over Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Tuesday evening at MacDowell Field.

With its eighth straight victory, the Beavers improved to 13-3 overall and 7-0 in conference play while Wellesley dropped its third game in a row to fall to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.

Helen DiGiovanni scored the first goal, sister Caroline added markers in the second and fourth quarters and senior Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) also scored for the Beavers. First-year Penny Baroni (Dennis, Mass.) picked up her first career assist and senior goalie Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made two saves in goal in the win.

Senior River Schiff (Potomac, Md.) scored the lone goal for the Blue with an assist from first-year Claudia Summers (San Diego, Calif.). Senior Eleanor Wenners (Rye, N.H.) made a defensive save and first-year goalie Maddie Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) made eight saves in the setback.

Helen DiGiovanni gave the Beavers a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game on a Babson penalty corner. Sharrow unleashed the first shot off the corner which got past Miller but Wenners prevented the goal with a defensive save, and DiGiovanni buried the rebound for her fifth goal of the season.

Miller prevented further damage with two minutes remaining in the opening frame when Caroline DiGiovanni stole the ball right in front of the Wellesley cage but was denied by Miller. A minute later, Miller made a stop on graduate student Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) but Evans poked in the rebound for her career-high 10th goal of the season.

The Blue kept Babson at bay for much of the second quarter but Caroline DiGiovanni scored her first goal with three minutes to go in the half, weaving through the Wellesley defense before unloading a spinning shot past Miller into the bottom right corner of the goal for 3-0 lead at the intermission.

The Green and White outshot the Blue 7-0 in the third frame but could not put any shots past Miller, who made two saves in the stanza. Caroline DiGiovanni tacked on her second of the game and career-high 12th of the season in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, taking a pass from Baroni near the right post and another spinning shot went through Miller for a 4-0 lead.

Wellesley got on the board with nine minutes remaining. Summers dribbled the ball down the left side and toward the goal before sliding a pass across the crease, where Schiff tapped in her eighth goal of the season. The Blue came to life and earned three penalty corners in the final eight minutes and had a shot by first-year Madeline Hamstra (Houston, Texas) denied by Furmanek.

Babson finished with a 23-7 margin shots, including 13-3 in shots on goal, and Wellesley had the advantage in penalty corners, 7-6.

The Beavers will play their final regular season road game on Saturday with a visit to arch-rival and 15th-ranked MIT at 12 p.m. in Cambridge. Wellesley returns home to host Clark in its Senior Day game on Saturday at Butler Stadium at 1 p.m.
