Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Mass.— The Babson College men's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of the season with a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victories over Emerson College and Clark University on Friday afternoon.
The Beavers began the day with a 6-1 verdict over Emerson at the Babson Tennis Courts and went on to post a 7-0 triumph over Clark at the Corash Tennis Courts in Worcester.
First-year
Edward Wang (Burr Ridge, Ill.) and sophomore
Mattias Harrell (Oslo, Norway) led the Beavers with four victories on the day, each winning in both singles and doubles in both matches. Senior
Brady Anderson (Rochester, N.Y.) and first-year
Sabastian Mendoza (Weston, Fla.) both went 3-0 on the day for the Green and White.
With the wins, the Beavers start the dual match portion of the year at 2-0 while Emerson is now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference and Clark drops to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play.
Babson 6, Emerson 1 (at Babson Park, Mass.)
The Beavers earned their first team point by sweeping the three doubles matches before taking five of the six singles match-ups. Wang was the winner at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Beavers, while Harrell, first-year
Gabriel Davis (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) and junior
Alexander Weber (Baech, Switzerland) were also winners in both singles and doubles for the Green and White.
Harrell and Weber started things off with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles, and Davis and Anderson clinched the team point with a 6-2 victory at No. 3. Wang and junior
Alexander Merson (Palisades Park, N.J.) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 triumph over sophomore Filippo Nocchi (Pontedera, Italy) and first-year Connor Leung (Mercer Island, Wash.) at No. 1.
Weber and Mendoza coasted to 6-0, 6-0 victories at No. 6 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Davis claimed a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 5, Harrell turned in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4, and Wang registered a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Nocchi in the top flight. The lone victory for the Lions came at No. 2 where Leung picked up the decision over Merson, 6-5, ret.
Babson 7, Clark 0 (at Worcester, Mass.)
The Green and White surrendered just six games en route to sweeping the three doubles matches. Wang and Mendoza started off with a 6-1 decision at No. 2; Harrell and first-year
Mason Nguyen (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) followed suit with a 6-2 verdict at No. 3; and Anderson and senior
Ole Lepsoe (Oslo, Norway) completed the doubles sweep with a 6-3 victory over junior Edward Shepherd-Johnson (Takoma Park, Md.) and sophomore Aris Kirkorian (Sunnyside, N.Y.) at No. 1.
Lepsoe captured a 6-0, 6-2 decision at No. 3 singles, Nguyen won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6, and Mendoza and Harrell both produced 6-3, 6-3 victories at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Anderson collected his third win of the day with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 2, and Wang finished off his 4-0 day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Shepherd-Johnson at No. 1 singles.
The Beavers will return to action in the spring semester beginning with a pair of matches against Nichols and Bryant on February 2 in Cumberland, R.I.
MATCH NOTES
• Babson is 14-0 all-time against Emerson in a series that dates back to 2008 and 34-2 all-time against Clark in a series that goes back to 1997.
• Wang finished off a terrific fall season, going 11-0 in singles and 6-3 in doubles. Mendoza (5-4) and Harrell (5-2) are second on the team in singles victories.
• Anderson went 6-4 in doubles to join Wang as the team leaders in doubles wins.
