BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student
Kento Abe (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore
McKenzy Pierre (West Orange, N.J.) both scored twice to lead No. 11 Babson College to a 5-0 win over visiting Salve Regina University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With its third straight win, Babson improves to 7-0-6 overall and 2-0-1 in league play. Salve Regina drops to 5-7-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Senior
Liam Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) also contributed a goal and classmate
Matias Gutierrez (Coral Gables, Fla.) recorded two assists to lead the Beavers. Gradate student
James Donaldson (Kirkland, Quebec), senior
Patrick Demaso (Easton, Conn.) and sophomore
Alexander Yablonovskiy (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) each had one assist, while senior
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) and first-year
JB Montague (Lutz, Fla.) combined to make three saves in the shutout.
First-year goalkeepers Adonis Santiago (Oakdale, Conn.) and Nick Giorgi (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) combined to make five saves in the loss for the Seahawks.
The Green and White needed just over four minutes to jump in front as Rhatigan took a feed from Gutierrez on the right wing and slide his finish past the charging Santiago from 10 yards for his third goal of the season. Pierre doubled the Beavers' lead in the 32nd minute with a 25-yard volley into the upper left corner after Yablonovskiy chested down a throw in from the right sideline by Demaso.
Rhatigan was taken down in the box less than 90 seconds into the second half and Abe stepped up and converted the penalty kick to make it 3-0 in the 47th minute. Salve Regina had its best chance to get on the board four minutes later when Babson was called for a foul in the box but Walker fully extended diving to his right to deny graduate student Evan Alpin's (Andover, Mass.) penalty kick.
Abe completed his brace in the 60th minute with a one-touch finish from the edge of the six-yard box off a pass from Gutierrez to make it 4-0. Pierre, who hit the crossbar in the 70th minute, capped the scoring at the 74:30 mark when put away a feed from Donaldson following a nice build up down the right side.
The Beavers outshot the Seahwaks 15-5 while both sides attempted two corner kicks in the match.
Babson is back in action on Sunday when it travels to Vermont to face No. 4 Middlebury at 2 p.m., while Salve Regina hosts Framingham State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
