MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—No. 4 Middlebury College scored a pair of goals in the span of just 48 seconds with less than three minutes remaining and defeated No. 11 Babson College, 3-1, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at South Street Field.
Babson, which had its 22-game regular-season unbeaten streak snapped, is now 7-1-6 on the year. Middlebury, which has not lost in 27 straight regular season contests, improves to 10-0-2 overall.
Senior goalkeeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) was terrific in defeat for the Beavers, finishing with a season-high 10 saves, including a number of highlight-reel stops. Classmate
Liam Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) scored for the second game in a row and graduate student
Kento Abe (Quincy, Mass.) provided an assist in the loss.
Sophomore Will Sawin (Stonington, Conn.), classmate Ari Klayman (Staten Island, N.Y.) and first-year Keagan Harder (Arlington, Mass.) each had a goal for the Panthers. Klayman and senior Kyle Nilsson (San Francisco, Calif.) both recorded an assist and junior Joey Waterman (North Andover, Mass.) finished with five saves in the win.
Middlebury opened the scoring in the fourth minute after a long throw in by Klayman. Nilsson flicked it just over White, who came charging off his line to punch it away, and Sawin buried a header for his third goal of the year.
White made a tremendous quick reaction save to deny Klayman's volley in the seventh minute and then extended his right hand to push away Hank Nelson's chance from inside 10 yards while moving to his left in the 20th minute. He also made a sprawling stop on sophomore Colin Dugan's (Avon, Conn.) penalty kick in the 37th minute to keep the Green and White within a goal at halftime.
The Beavers got back on level terms in the 57th minute on Rhatigan's third goal of the year. Sophomore
Will Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) tracked down a loose ball on the right wing and found Abe, who drove towards goal before sliding a pass across the face of goal for Rhatigan, who blasted a shot past Waterman from inside the six-yard box.
Both goalkeepers made strong plays to keep the game deadlocked over the final half-hour. White dove to his right to get a hand on a driving header by senior Shane Farrell (Essex Fells, N.J.) and somehow kept the ball from crossing the goal line the 60th minute, while Waterman came charging off his line to deflect graduate student
James Donaldson's (Kirkland, Quebec) shot off a service from Abe in the 76th minute.
The Panthers took the lead for good with 2:51 remaining in regulation when Klayman drilled a rebound inside the left post after White had denied the initial shot by Dugan on the counter-attack. Middlebury tacked on an insurance goal 45 seconds later when Harder forced a giveaway and then settled the ball with two defenders on him before calmly tucking his finish inside the right post.
The Panthers finished with a 14-6 edge in shots on goal while both teams attempted four corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson visits No. 21 Wheaton at 1 p.m., while Middlebury travels to No. 3 Tufts at 12 p.m.
