MONTCLAIR, N.J.—Senior Enir Radoncic (Matawan, N.J.) scored with 1:16 remaining to break a 1-1 tie and lift Montclair State University to a 2-1 victory over Babson College in non-conference men's soccer action Friday evening at the MSU Soccer Park.
With the loss, Babson had its 11-game unbeaten streak snapped and drops to 2-1-1 on the season while Montclair State remains unbeaten on the year at 3-0-0.
Sophomore
Liam Goldstein (Princeton, N.J.) scored the lone Babson goal with an assist from classmate
Robin Pestka (Highland Park, N.J.). Junior
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made five saves in goal in the setback, four of which came in the first half.
Junior Amer Lukovic (Clifton, N.J.) also scored for the Red Hawks and senior Osbin Mendez (Piscataway, N.J.) and sophomore Anthony Viola (Jackson, N.J.) registered assists. Fifth-year keeper Shane Keenan (Hazlet, N.J.) made two saves to record the victory for MSU.
The two teams played a tight defensive battle with neither team able to break through for the first 75 minutes. The hosts had a 9-3 margin in shots (4-1 in shots on goal) in the first half and took all three corners in the opening 45 minutes but could not get past the Babson defense, which had not allowed a goal in its first three contests of the season.
Montclair broke the deadlock in the 77th minute of play. Babson senior
Ryan Kim (San Ramon, Calif.) broke up a Red Hawk attack with a slide tackle just outside the box, but the loose ball went to Lukovic, who went to his left to split a pair of defenders then slipped a quick low shot just inside the left post past a diving White to put the hosts on the board.
Babson senior
Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) had a scoring chance off a corner kick with 11 minutes remaining, but his header went wide right.
The Beavers produced the equalizer in the 81st minute on another corner kick. Pestka served up the corner from the left side and Goldstein redirected the ball with a header inside the right post to tie the match.
MSU was awarded a corner kick with 90 seconds remaining which created an excellent opportunity by junior Owen Murphy (Scotch Plains, N.J.) but the ball was knocked away from the goal line by Babson senior
Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.). MSU kept pressing, and a cross from left end line by Mendez was converted by Radoncic on a header for what turned out to be the game-winner.
The hosts finished with a 17-9 advantage in shots, including 8-3 in shots on goal. Montclair doubled up the Beavers in corner kicks, 6-3.
Babson will remain in the Garden State to take on No. 3 Stevens on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hoboken. Montclair will host Endicott on Sunday at 1 p.m.
