HOBOKEN, N.J.—Junior Luca Campbell (Montclair, N.J.) scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute as the third-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology defeated visiting Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Babson, which has dropped two straight games, dips to 2-2-1 on the year while Stevens improves to 2-1-1 with its second consecutive victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made five saves in defeat for the Beavers. His counterpart, Ducks' graduate student Justin Cross (South Brunswick, N.J.), turned away two shots to record his second shutout of the year.
The Green and White created its best scoring chance of the game in the in the seventh minute only to see junior
Lyndon Way's (Atlanta, Ga.) volley off of senior
Ryan Kim's (San Ramon, Calif.) corner kick ring off the left post and out of danger. Stevens took the lead in the 16th minute on Campbell's first goal of the season.
Sophomore Ben Goldberg (Evanston, Ill.) headed a long ball into the box back across the front of the goal and White reacted quickly to make a terrific save on Campbell's volley from the edge of the six-yard box, but he tracked down the loose ball and banged home the rebound to put the hosts in front. The Beavers outshot the Ducks 9-5 over the final 45 minutes but were unable to find an equalizer.
Graduate student
Owen Guglielmino (Cheshire, Conn.) missed just wide of the left past from the top of the box in the 47th minute, while seniors
Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) and
Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) saw their shots from distance sail over the crossbar later in the half. Cross also handled first-year
Ted Rosenfeld's (Morristown, N.J.) 20-yard strike in the 75th minute.
Both sides finished with 11 shots and the Beavers attempted four of the five corner kicks in the match.
Babson concludes its three-game road swing with a visit to Western New England on Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Stevens hosts TCNJ on Saturday at 6 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Sunday's match was the first all-time between Babson and Stevens.
• After winning six consecutive games decided by a single goal, the Beavers have now dropped two straight one-goal decisions.
• Prior to Sunday, the Green and White had not conceded a first-half marker in 12 consecutive matches going back to October 15 of last year.
