NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—No. 2 Babson College erupted for three goals in a two-minute span in the fourth quarter, including a pair of goals by sophomore
Caroline DiGiovanni (Harwich, Mass.), and the Beavers went on to a 4-0 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action Saturday afternoon at the Smith Turf Field.
With the win, the Beavers posted their fourth straight shutout victory and improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play while the Pioneers had a two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Junior goalie
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) needed to make just one save to record her fourth straight shutout and sixth on the season. Junior
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) and graduate student
Sinead Walsh (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) also scored for the Beavers, junior
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) collected two assists and senior
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) added one helper in the win.
Sophomore keeper Abby Halpin (Pine Bush, N.Y.) had a solid effort in the Smith goal and finished with six saves.
The Beavers jumped on top in the first quarter when Sharrow pounded in a rebound from the left baseline for her fourth goal of the season. The Green and White continued to pressure the Pioneer goal in the second frame but had to settle for the one-goal lead at halftime. Both teams mustered two shots in the third quarter but Smith stayed within striking range.
Babson started to pull away early in the fourth quarter off a penalty corner. After a shot by graduate student
Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontatio) was blocked, Evans collected the loose ball and centered a pass from the right end line to Walsh in front, and she rifled a shot past Halpin to give the Beavers some breathing room.
Just 43 seconds later, Evans set up another goal from the right side, this time dribbling past a defender along the end line before slipping a pass to DiGiovanni in front, who lifted a shot into the empty net to make it 3-0. Babson struck again moments later when Marguerite slipped past a defender on the left end line and slid a pass across to DiGiovanni on the doorstep, and she tapped in her second of the game and seventh of the season.
The Green and White finished with a 14-4 advantage in shots (10-1 in shots on goal) and had a 9-4 margin in penalty corners.
Babson opens a three-game homestand on Tuesday with a NEWMAC encounter against WPI at 6 p.m. at MacDowell Field. Smith visits Clark for a NEWMAC match-up Tuesday at 7 p.m.
