BABSON PARK, Mass.— Junior
Camille Marsh (Englewood, Colo.) scored a pair of goals and No. 2 Babson College pulled away from WPI for a 5-1 victory Tuesday evening in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action at MacDowell Field.
With the victory, the Beavers extended their winning streak to five game and improved to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the NEWMAC while the Engineers had a four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 4-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
Juniors
Berit Sharrow (Denver, Colo.) and
Jessica Evans (Southbury, Conn.) and first-year
Ashley Braren (Westwood, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, and graduate students
Meara Hanyon (Brodheadsville, Pa.) and
Brianne McGrath (Newmarket, Ontario) recorded assists in the win. Junior goalie
Bayla Furmanek (State College, Pa.) made one save in 56-plus minutes before giving way to sophomore
Josie Ashton (Chatham, N.J.), who made her first appearance of the season in goal.
Senior Emily Sollecito (Bedford, Mass.) broke up the shutout for the visitors late in the fourth quarter with an assist by classmate Abigail Rauch (Jackson, N.J.). Junior Ella Moreau (Huntington, Mass.) made five saves in goal in the setback.
Babson took all five shots of the first period but went scoreless into the second frame. Sharrow put the hosts on the board three minutes in following a penalty corner, firing a hard shot from the left side inside the right post on a feed from Hanyon. The Beavers doubled their lead five minutes later after McGrath stole a pass, dribbled inside the circle on right and sent a centering pass to Marsh, who found the upper right corner with reverse chip shot.
The Green and White made it a 3-0 game five minutes into the third quarter. A shot by senior
Andrea Marguerite (Hopkinton, Mass.) was deflected on goal by graduate student
Jackie Hill (Franklin, N.H.) and stopped by Moreau, but Braren was there to pounce on the rebound and finish off her second goal of the season. Babson made it 4-0 late in the third period off a corner when Evans took a crossing pass from Marguerite and spun around a defender before burying her third goal of the campaign.
Marsh rounded out the scoring for the Beavers in the 51st minute when she stole the ball, dribbled past three defenders on her way into the box, then ripped a shot inside the left post for her second of the game and team-leading 10th of the season.
The Engineers finally broke through in the 57th minute off a corner, as Rauch deflected the ball in front to Sollecito near the left post and she bunted the ball past Furmanek for her second goal of the season.
Babson finished with a 20-3 advantage in shots (12-2 in shots on goal) and had a 6-4 margin in penalty corners.
Both teams resume play with NEWMAC games on Saturday as Babson hosts Salve Regina at 12 p.m. and WPI entertains MIT at 11 a.m.
